A question for child care providers and parents.

I've been reading some ads on craigslist for child care providers for a few months now. Most list how long they've been in business, what their rates are, what their hours are, what the day would be like, meals serves, CPR certification....


I've come across this ad several times over the last few months. To me it just seems a bit odd to have this information in an ad offering child care services in your home. This is an ad placed by a 33yo old woman.

"I am the oldest of three with 8 & 10 years between us. By the time I was 7 years old I was already going to Lamas and Bradley classes to be a birthing coach for my mom who had both of my brothers at home. I was actually able to participate in their births! I too had my daughter ALL-NATURAL! " This is exactly how the ad is placed, including the caps and punctuation. The ad also includes pictures of the mom and her daughter.

For parents seeking child care, would any of this matter to you when choosing someone to care for your child?

It wouldn't matter to me, but I know several people (mostly online) who would get very excited about it.

The information the ad stated would not help me make my decision UNLESS my daughter was going to give birth! I would hope all folks looking for childcare are actually looking for childcare NOT a birthing coach!

I agree and I gave birth "ALL-NATURAL" too. I would care about how this person appropriately trained to provide childcare, good references from people I know, up to date clearances, what does her facility look like and my general gut feeling.

Based on what you posted OP, my gut says, "No way Jose!"

It doesn't state any actual qualifications such as ability to provide age-appropriate programs, etc.

Cuz we all know that the only REAL moms are those who sweat out their 36hr labor with a rag between their teeth. I think you get a gold trophy or something

Maybe it's just part of 'proving' what a natural environment it is. Wierd. Definitely sounds more appropriate to a doula (not midwife!!) ad.

No, it's definitely for a posting for a home day care. The title of the ad was something like "Loving home day care"

It didn't include anything about other natural products but said that she was a loving and fun mom. Good to know that she's not a crabby, mean mom.


I'm not sure that I'd post a picture of my child on Craigslist.

As for the listing-I really don't think I would use ANYONE for daycare from an ad on Craigslist.

I would not use Craigslist to find childcare. If you want in home care, I would ask around for referrals from other parents.

I can understand using craigslist. To me, it's no different than finding an ad in the newspaper, the phone book or a referral organization. For parents that are new to an area, getting referrals from others parents could be difficult. As with anything, you need to interview the provider, check references and certifications...

That's true. A friend of mine had a 12lb 2oz baby (two weeks early )that was difficult to deliver even by C-section. They had to make + shaped incision in her uterus to get the baby out because her head was too big and it wouldn't fit through the normal incision. If she had that baby All Natural, neither of them would probably be around today.

I think the idea of finding childcare on craigslist is creepy in the first place and that lady's ad confirms my initial thoughts, lol

I did however sign-up for a site called care.com which is an online resource for childcare. They do background checks etc as well. I didn't end up finding my daughter's daycare there but I thought it was a helpful resource.
