A question for Catholics re: Lent

Ok, I am having this discussion with a friend of mine and would like some input. I teach in a Catholic school so I really hope I am correct I've always been taught that Lent ends before the evening Mass on Holy Thursday, which is when the Triduum begins. My friend says that Lent ends on the evening of Holy Saturday- this is what her priest told her.

On a side note, she gave up alcohol for Lent and is trying to justify having a drink tonight.

Ok, found this, for the Catholic Church it is tonight, for everyone else, Saturday:

Holy Saturday is the traditional end of Lent in most traditions. While the Catholic Church considers that Holy Thursday is the official end of Lent, you are expected to continue to sacrifice up until Sunday. You can therefore start doing something again that you gave up for lent on Easter Sunday. Personally, I have been getting stuck into the Easter Eggs.

My mom - our super catholic - says it ends on Holy Saturday - night of the Easter Vigil. Looked it up, and she is right.

Uh, thanks- I did that also before posting here and found conflicting information- as evidenced by the person right above you who said it definitely ends on Saturday while a PP agreed with me...

I googled it too and found that it ends on Holy Thursday. Guess the internet is not always so reliable.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday.

That's 46 days taking off the 6 Sundays during Lent making Holy Saturday the 40th day of Lent.

Ok, conflicting information!! What is the "official" site? I also looked on the americancatholic.org website and found info to back up my stance. For the people who say Holy Saturday- is that what you were taught or do you know of a place where I can find the official Catholic Church's stance? Thanks!

I think Catholics who abstain from meat on Fridays still abstain on Good Friday. I always thought it ended on Easter.

Well the official site would be that of the Vatican I suppose. I looked there and it didn't say anything. One thing thing to think about is that the Catholic faith believes differently in the Tridium and that could be the confusion?

Actually, officially Good Friday is a day of fasting, thus not eating more than a meal and a 1/2 (officially). Abstinence is different.

My DH has been a parish director of liturgy for 30yrs. Lent ends tonight as the Triduum begins.

Every google I saw said for the CATHOLIC church lent ends tonight, then it is Holy Week, then Easter season. The rest of the Christian churches Lent ends at the Easter Vigil. I don't even know, do the rest of the Christian churches have services tonight with the washing of the feet, etc?

my husband is Baptist. His church is having a service tonight with the observance of the Lord's Supper. I don't think he had ever heard of the washing of the feet until I told him about it.

Thanks. In our old church everyone in the congregation was invited to participate, here our priest is kind of a fuddy duddy and only has a few people participate--usually just the Knights of Columbus. I love the Masses for Holy Week.

My home parish only had a select few participate, as well. Thinking back, I'm not sure what the connection was.

Lent comes to an end before the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday. That liturgy begins the Triduum, the great Three Days that celebrate the central mystery of our faith.
