DS performed his Division I solo on Saturday ISSMA contest and got a Gold. Not only was it in the most difficult division but it was one of the hardest solos to be performed. It was "Phantom Phire" for those of you in the snare/percussion world and it is labeled "extremely advanced". It had twirling drumsticks and all kinds of wild stuff. This was a college level piece.

He is only 14 and in the 8th grade and is also a great kid. Not cocky, but just a cool kid. I'm most proud that he has this tremendous talent and he handles it very well.

Just had to share!

Congratulations!

Question for you though. What does the IS stand for in ISSMA? I know SMA is School Music Assocation (I had participated in NYSMA a few times back in HS). But for the life of me, I can't figure out the IS in yours.

Congrats Claudia. My DD performed this weekend also and she received the highest rating. No twirling drumsticks though! Just her and her flute, not even an out of tune piano.

Way to go! DS is a music major, was a self-described "band geek" in High School, and I've got many fond memories of being a band parent. Good luck-maybe some day he'll be marching down MS, and you'll be crying with pride.

The "I" is for Indiana. I think the "S" is for State, but I'm not sure. It is a similar organization to NYSMA, I'm sure.

Tell your son I say congrats. I mean it. I'm also his age and in the band, but I'm a clarinetist. Just by reading about his performance, he sounds like a truly dedicated musician. My school band needs a percussionist like him.

Thanks! It's probably the same. I think that the SMA just differentiates by having the state initials in the front.

Come to think of it I believe ours is spelled NYSSMA for New York State School Music Association.

That is so cool Claudia. It seems whatever he does he does extremely well. I know he probably won't remember me but tell him I'm really impressed.
