Okay ladies I know I cant be the only one out there that is looking to get some heavy duty "shape wear" AKA girdles to wear under my wedding dress. I was wondering what past/future brides have used or are using, what is the best out there? I have no idea what i should buy and it is all kind of expensive so i dont want to waste money on something that wont work.

Have you asked your bridal store? I know when I bought my dress they offered me several types of girdles to try with it, but I got lucky that my dress is a corset style and whether I wore a girdle or not it looked the same. So I'll be only wearing undies under my dress, nothing else ;) The corset style really helps lift the girls and that was my only worry with a wedding dress.

My favorite brands are Rago and Kiss Me Deadly. If you go to Girdle Bound , they have lots of different styles and brands, all reasonably priced.
A good forum to check out for advice is the Fedora Lounge, the powder room has some great discussions on quality girdles and shapewear.

If you're just looking for shapewear to leave you smooth I highly recommend Spanx. They are AMAZING! Miracle workers! And they are comfy, not constricting at all.

When I wear gowns, I usually go with a strapless longline bra. I'm bigger on top so I find this actually supports and as a bonus whittles my waist too, really giving me even more of an hourglass shape. My gown has a built in corset, so I think I will be skipping it for the wedding though.

I used a true corset (from Frederick's). I loved it. It helped my posture. It smoothed me out and my shape was great.

My only warning with corsets is to find a really good one. Most of the commercial ones will have plastic boning in them, and not only does that make the corset weaker but I have heard of the bones breaking and actually stabbing the wearer deep enough to need stitches. So if you're looking for much reduction or shaping, it's often better to spend a little more and get a steel boned corset. Built into your gown means you aren't going to tighten it down a lot, so it's not a concern there thankfully.

yikes! dually noted. I need to try a couple on I think and decide what i want.

It's not a girdle but I am a huge fan of Spanx. I think they work wonders and are more comfortable than girdles. And i can actually wear it under other dresses I have, not just for my wedding gown.

I wore the one that went all they way from under my breast down to my thighs just above my knees. I had cups in my dress and I used the stick on silicone inserts form Victoria's secret.

Spanx helped hold me in, flatten me, and give me a great smooth line under my dress all the while being pretty comfortable.

I LOVE Agent Provocateur......expensive but worth it. They are steel boned; I actually have a couple that I switch in and out under suits for work..you can wear them everyday and for being a corset they are really comfortable I am a double DD and they give me a wonderful hourglass shape :)

I was going to do Spanx under my dress, but the Spanx I wore for the rehearsal made me uber hot. Of course it was 90 degrees, so that might have had something to do with it! :rotfl:

I love my SPANX!!! they suck you in without giving you a "muffin top" issue- and they really dont roll up or down. I have tried the cheaper version (ASSETS) and its just not the same!

okay i think i am just going to go with some spanx. I thought that they were just more for smoothing out than holding in, but if they suck you too then I'm all about it! It's good to hear that they dont give you that muffin top look or roll down. I think I have had that problem with every pair of tights I own.

Luckily my dress is a corset style with a very supportive built in bra, as I don't think I'd be able to cope all day with tight underwear under a heavy dress.

The spanx is looking great for other occasions though!
