Hi All
I was wondering if someone can answer a quick question for me, i know we need a passport to fly into the United States from Canada as of Jan 1st 2007 but i want to know when we drive there in May 2008 will we need a passport ?
i know that we will need one at one point but i have heard that it will start either Jan 1st 2008 and also heard it will start Jan 1st 2009 does anyone know what one is correct.

Thanks The Crocetti family

The dates keep changing, I thought that it was back to Jan. 08. We went ahead and got the passports for all 5 of us to avoid probs. It only took 2 weeks to get them all back w/o paying to expedite.

According to Canadian Foreign Affairs and Travel, "You should have a valid Canadian passport for all trips outside of Canada..." So whether or not the U.S. will allow entry from Canada may be the least of the issues if Canadians must have a valid passport to re-enter their country. Here is the website I am referencing. Even here in the U.S. when passports were not required, I applied for one for each of my immediate family as they are the only absolute proof of U.S. citizenship...

That's a very wise decision. It's far better to apply for a passport when you don't need it then to wait until you do and then stress about whether it will arrive in time. There's been no official timetable announced for the new land/sea WHTI passport/passcard requirements, but when it is announced, you can expect a massive backlog of passport applications similar to what we saw at the beginning of 2007 when the air travel portion of WHTI went into effect.

Yes, go ahead and get them. Even if they're not required, they can make customs go a little faster.
