I just finished listening to the podcast from last week, and as usual, I'm late to the party. :)

Julie's rapidfire was about the lineup of Bands at Mardi Gras at Universal:

FEB 8 DAUGHTRY
FEB 15 BARENAKED LADIES
FEB 16 THOMAS RHETT
FEB 22 ROBIN THICKE
MAR 1 COLLECTIVE SOUL
MAR 8 PRINCE ROYCE
MAR 14 CODY SIMPSON
MAR 15 FOREIGNER
MAR 22 GAVIN DEGRAW
APR 5 SKILLET
APR 12 LYNYRD SKYNYRD
APR 19 KOOL & THE GANG
MAY 3 NELLY
MAY 10 THE WANTED
Other dates are still to be announced. As Julie announced the lineup, she and other members of the podcast team made remarks about some of the bands. Julie was excited about Daughtry playing for the 1st time since 2007. The reaction to Robin Thicke was pretty funny, and Julie thought Foreigner was exciting. Then we got to Skillet, who none of the Podcasters knew anything about, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, who some of the Podcasters thought they knew something about, but didn't.

Skillet is a Crossover Christian/Mainstream hard rock band, who, according to Billboard, was one of only three rock bands to have an album go platinum in 2012. The "Awake" album sold 1.1 million copies as of June 2013. Skillet played Night of Joy at MK last year, and I don't think that was their first time, but I could be wrong about that. You can bet when they play Mardi Gras, they'll have a good crowd. They always do.

When Julie said the words Lynyrd Skynyrd, Theresa responded with "Oh my Lord", John said "You talk about, didn't know he was still alive", Pete said "Yeah Really" and Julie said to John "Honey, he's dead, they just have a new singer." So it's time for a Skynyrd history lesson.

First of All, there is no "He". No one in the band is named Lynyrd or Skynyrd. They named themselves after a high school gym teacher named Leonard Skinner who sent a couple of them to the principal for not meeting the school dress code, because their hair was too long.

On October 20, 1977 lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and backup singer Cassie Gaines, and road manager Dean Kilpatrick along with the pilot and co-pilot, were killed in a plane crash near Gillsburg, Ms. on their way to play a concert in Baton Rouge, La. Other members of the band were badly injured. In 1987 the band reformed with Ronnie's youngest brother, Johnny Van Zant, taking over as lead singer. Ed King, who left the band 2 years before the plane crash, returned to the band, and Randall Hall took over for Allen Collins, who had been paralyzed in a car accident. Though the band has been through numerous lineup changes, they are still recording and touring today.

You can debate the merits of the band today vs the original lineup, but there is no denying the success they've had since reforming. They went on a very successful 40th anniversary tour with Bad Company last year.
By the way, the "new" singer has been with the band for 27 years.

Foreigner, who Julie said was exciting, has had their current singer, Kelly Hansen, since 2005. I'm pretty sure guitarist Mick Jones is the only original member left. Foreigner is still a very good band and my daughter's choir may have a chance to sing "I Want To Know What Love Is" with them in Beaumont, Tx in February.

I hope I didn't bore you with the history lesson. I'm just an old hippie, :hippie: and I really like Rock n' Roll. :thumbsup2

What are we talking here? The Andrew Sisters, Go-Gos, The Breeders, TLC..... what genres.

Also, was Janelle Monae or Wu Tang not available. Who books Nelly anymore?

Ronettes
Crystals
Darlene Love (I love Darlene Love)
Shangrilas
Dixie Cups
Angels (I used to work with one of the Angels)

I used to work in Radio and met Darlene Love at a show. Also, have seen GoGos and Ronnie Spector of Ronettes live.

There are some decent southern ladies getting some traction with a bit of a classic 1960s style (mainly Nashville area and not very country).

Secret Sisters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVFu7_uIPrU

Shovels and Rope (My Favorites and Husband and Wife): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_Vkseo4xf4

Brittany Howard (Like Otis Redding and Janis Joplin had a love child) from Alabama Shakes doing some solo stuff: http://youtu.be/TLsxvz4jebE?t=4m36s

All of these are live videos.

Gasp! No Supremes?

Gasp! No Supremes?

Honestly, I was more surprised by not having Martha Reeves and The Vandellas. Always preferred them over Supremes.

Also, does anyone still remember the Stax records ladies like The Emotions or Shirley Brown ('Woman to Woman' is a classic)?

"Music lesson?" - this isn't a "music lesson" - when I read this I thought I was in for long tones, staccato, and scales.

You know, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol....

So it would be

Do -
Re -
Mi -
Fa -
Sol -
La -
Ti -

And of course, when you rhyme T with P you get trouble and then,

One fine night, they leave the pool hall,
Headin' for the dance at the Arm'ry!
Libertine men and Scarlet women!
And Rag-time, shameless music
That'll grab your son and your daughter
With the arms of a jungle animal instinct!
Mass-steria!
Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground!

Oh we got trouble!

(trouble w/a capital T & that rhymes with P & that stands for pool)
That stands for pool!

Guys...

This wasn't my "girl group" thesis.

This is something I answered while roasting vegetables for dinner.

You should be more amazed that most everything was spelled right.

And if you want something more....

I love the..

Shirelles
Marvelettes
Wanda Jackson
Dusty springfield
The Exciters (while not a girl group, they have one the best female voices in Rock and Roll history, Brenda Reid. Don't believe me...go listen to Tell Him or He's Got the Power.)

Please don't consider this a complete or exhaustive list. I'm just playing around until the Housewives of Beverly Hills comes on. (don't judge me!)

Oh...and the Supremes were great....but they couldn't touch the Ronettes or the Crystals.

Wanda Jackson, The Fujiyama Mama. I had the chance of seeing her at Jack White's Third Man Records. She still kills it at her advanced years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ0-fNin7Wg

Walk her once just to raise the curtain,
Walk around twice and you make for certain.
Once more in the flower garden,
She will never get sore
If you beg her pardon.

Do re me fa so la si

I have been to three Skillet concerts. Well, I did not exactly stay the whole concert.. I went out in the parking lot to wait for my kids after awhile which brought the volume down to almost tolerable. I do have to say that some of their songs are growing on me!

Dough, with which I buy my beer,
Ray, the guy I buy beer from,
Me, the guy I buy beer for,
Far, a long way to the store...
So, I think I'll have a beer,
La de da de da de da,
Tea? No thanks, I'll have a beer,
Which will bring us back to dough.

Best quote ever, Jeff! Yehaa Bob rules. :cheer2:

Oh boy this sounds like a conversation (read: argument) my df and I hash out daily. He likes heavy metal bands which Skillet seems to fall into and I like Elton John and basically anything that is the antithesis of heavy metal. Just last night he was reading a ticketmaster alert about Patty Lupone and Mandy Patinkin touring and after he attempted to say their names but was only able to mangle them, I had to correct him and assure him that I would never make him go to that. It was our own mini-music lesson complete with eye rolling. Ain't love grand ;)

Skillet is pretty heavy, but the words/themes in their songs definitely lean Christian. The good news for me is, I like all sorts of music. I'm in a Contemporary Christian Praise Band, but I listen to a VERY wide variety of music, including Elton John, who I've seen twice. :thumbsup2 I've been to approximately 450 concerts in the last 30 years. Of the bands playing Mardi Gras at Universal, I've seen Collective Soul 4 times, Foreigner 3 times, Gavin DeGraw once, Skillet 2 times, Lynyrd Skynyrd more times than I can count, and Kool and the Gang once. Did I mention I was an old hippie. :hippie:

You can never see Elton too many times! It's up to 4 now for me :) And Gavin Degraw is on my list but I have not seen him yet. He has an amazingly soulful voice with some good musicality in the songs. In these days of autotune, it's refreshing to hear real musicians who actually write and sing their own stuff! I also like Amos Lee for that reason. Hooray for hippies!
