I posted this on the movie board, too but more people may check this out here...

Anyone who calls themselves a Disney animation fan should definitely check out the just released on dvd "Waking Sleeping Beauty" which details the Disney animation renaissance of 1987-1994 which brought us The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.

I loved the documentary and wanted to watch literally hours upon hours more footage. This "inner working" stuff was simply amazing to watch, particularly the info on how huge of a role lyricist Howard Ashman played in the success of the creation of the animated classics.

Anyway, a full review of the flick can be found over at my blog -- rymickey.blogspot.com -- but this is a flick all Disney fans will really enjoy.

We rented it last week and enjoyed it very much.

I thought it odd that there was such a time lag between when the documentary ended (Lion King) and when Waking Sleeping Beauty was released (2009?). It seemed that WSB was meant to document only the Katzenberg era. The film was good in that it showed some of the internal conflicts without taking sides or being too heavy handed.

RyMickey is spot-on with this recommendation:thumbsup2 When you learn more about the talent that has passed through Disney's doors, you appreciate the films even more. Such genius is awe-inspiring.:)

I think a major reason for the lag is that this is not a film that the filmmakers (who were Disney employees themselves) couldn't even think about making with Michael Eisner still in charge of the company. Eisner (along with Katzenberger) needed to be removed from the experience in order to even consider participating, I'd think. "Time heals all" they say (or something to that extent).

I bought that for my DD13 for Christmas and we both watched it this week. We both really enjoyed it!!!:)

(I bought her books and DVDs on history/background/imagineering of Disney and this was the hit this Christmas!!!!! What a kid!:))

We saw it in the movie theater several months ago and enjoyed it.
