Just got back from a two week vacation at DLR and Aulani.

I'll post some Aulani pics later this week...........

But first, a moment of silence.

At the end of our fourth day in Aulani, my camera (a Canon 300D - their first digital slr) started having focussing problems. None of the lenses I had in my back would autofocus anymore. I figured it must be in need of cleaning, so I cleaned all the lenses and the body (which I had done before the trip) that evening and it seemed to be focussing again (albeit with a little hunting) in the room. I did not do a sensor clean, just checked for dust in the body, etc.

When I woke up the next morning, I fired off a shot on an empty memory card and only 1/3 of the image showed up after clicking the shutter (the top 1/3 of the image). I switched memory cards and fired off another test shot. Same results. I checked the images I had shot after cleaning and they were all ok. I switched batteries. Same results. Found an empty memory card, formatted it in camera, and tried - same results.

My camera is dead!

Luckily I had my iPhone 4 and my wife has a Nikon Coolpix. So we were still able to get shots for the rest of our vacation.

Oh well, now I just have to save up enough pennies for a new camera body.

Sorry to hear your camera went down! But on the bright side it does allow you to upgrade with no regrets!! I very recently came across a deal on the camera I have been drooling about the last year. The deal was to good to pass up, but its hard spending the $ when you have two completely functioning DSLR's!!! Just think of the fun you are going to have researching and planning the purchase. Hang in there and good luck.

I'm going to see what Canon's next announcement is.

If I hit the lotto (or land a good side gig) between now and Christmas I'll go for a 5D / 7D. If I don't, then it will be saving up my pennies for a 60D.

Actually it is a good thing that I can buy a new camera body with no hesitation. I was struggling with the "why do I need a new body, just get more glass?" every time I wanted to pull the trigger on a new body before.

I think the "we vote on what camera you should get next" is an EXCELLENT Idea!

I'd like to nominate the Nikon D7000, or failing that price range, a used Nikon D90 will do nicely.

Of course everyone will just vote for the camera that they have and the heck with you.....

On second thought, just tell us that you are going to get the winning camera and then go out and get what YOU want....

So sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved surrogate child. Don't forget about the Canon loyalty program. I'd tell you to get a body only, but the kit lenses are so much better than they used to offer. Don't look at this as a loss....... look at it as a wonderful buying opportunity! Surely you've been wanting something with higher ISO anyway???????

One of my (many) Rebel cameras (XT I think????) died half way through our second day at Disneyland in 07. I was quite happy I had my little point and shoot as a backup. But we were on a big driving vacation through the desert southwest and we visited some GRAND places after that. It was funny how out of place I felt taking pictures of grand scenery with that tiny point & shoot.

Canon 300D - their first digital slr

The 300D came out in 2003. Before that, Canon sold the D30 (2000), the 1D (2001), the D60 (2002), the 10D (2003), and the 1Ds (2003). The thing that made the 300D special was that it was the first DSLR priced under $1,000.

I think now would be a bad time to buy a higher end Canon. The 1Ds is overdue for replacement. The 5D is due for replacement. There are lots of rumors floating around. They've got a big announcement planned for November 3rd, but the signs point to that being a video camera rather than a still camera. It is possible that it will be a successor to the 5D, but I doubt it. I'm guessing that it will be next spring before the 5D and 1Ds are replaced, but that's purely speculation. If I actually knew anything, I wouldn't be able to say anything.

I'm not buying anything in the next two to three months so I have time for the rumor mill to churn out info on the new camera.

If you decide to ignore the 'Time to go Nikon' advice...

Canon has a 'Customer Loyalty Program' which may be of interest if you are not averse to buying a refurb directly from Canon.

The way the deal works is that you send them a broken Canon camera and receive 20% off the price of a selected refurb camera.

Both the the 7D and 60D bodies are part of the program. A 7D body would end up costing $1,087.20 plus Tax, a 60D body would be $639.99 + Tax.

You could either send them your busted 30D or sell it and buy some clunker at a local pawn shop - it doesn't even need to be a DSLR - just needs to be a Canon (Point and Shoot, Film body, etc).

I'm wrestling with the decision of whether to buy a new 60D body or a refurb myself...

I gave my sister our old 300 this year since we have the XSi and the 60D at our house. She wanted to pay me something and I said I wasn't going to take anything from her because I knew that camera might last another year or break in week.

I think she got a better deal in the CF cards. We had about 10 cards including an 8gb, a 2gb, on down.

Sounds like the shutter has failed. Shutters can be replaced for about $250... You might want to contact the canon Repair Center and find out more about it.

And have to buy all new lenses too? Not a practical move. When I converted from film to digital, I already had several thousand dollars invested in good lenses, so I wasn't going to switch systems...

I was thinking the same thing. The first post was he checked all the lenses. Key work "all". No need to change brands now. I flirted with the idea of doing the loyalty trade in program but thought why would I want to say $200 or so and get a refurb? Just buy new. Sorry to hear about the camera dying before your big trip. That would have crushed me. Glad you had a point and shoot as a backup. Part of the fun on vacation is taking a few thousand shots. How was the trip?
