All the threads I have read about film has got me nervous, my girlfriend and I are going on the land and sea vacation starting May 31st, she has never been to wdw or on a cruise. So she is very excited about taking pictures. Now she isn't a pro, she is using a camera that you can buy at best buy and film you can buy at walmart she isn't trying to have professional pictures but on the other hand she doesn't want the ones she does take to be damaged. We have always drove to FL this time we will be flying, what have all of you past cruisers done with your film please help calm my nerves?

i always use disposable cheap cameras, and i have never had any problems with my film. I typically always have some in my carry on packed, as well as in the checked luggage...

If she uses film of less than 1000 ASA, then she should have no problems with the film in her carry-ons. I never have. However, when flying recently and having to have my checked baggage passed through the new explosive-detection machines, the operators have always asked if there was any film in the checked baggage before running the bags through. Just to be on the safe side, I'd suggest not putting film in your checked luggage.

There are signs everywhere in the airports here and Orlando that all say do not put film or delicate electronics in any checked luggage, the new scanners will damage them. This does not apply to carryons.

If you're really worried, You can go the extreme- they do sell 35mm and Advantix type film onboard, and they will develop your film in Shutters for, I think, 40¢ a print, not too expensive, we did develop our underwater cameras onboard. They need 1 day turnaround, so no last day developing. And it's Kodak process so the prints do come out nice.

That said we did bring 2 underwater cameras from home in our carryon and they developed fine.

I just read an article in my "Outdoor Photography" magazine on this subject. Although the airlines are claiming nothing under 1000 speed will be impacted by the carryon scanners the pros are saying to drop that to 800 (and on the underwaters I just purchased which are 800 speed it states "protect from xray exposure"). Also most of those "it is ok at this speed" is based on a single exposure. So the more times a roll goes through the greater the chances of fogging.

Definitely do NOT put anything in your checked baggage. Carry it on. It can't hurt to pick up one or more of the lead lined bags for the fillm/camera to go in either.

We were told 800 speed and under is fine for carry-on x-ray machines. We brought about 30 rolls and 4 underwater disposables with us....all carry-ons. At airport leaving Chicago, boarding the ship, re-boarding after shore excursions and boarding the plane at Orlando to go home. Every picture came out. We used 400 speed in out 35mm.

What about using one of the mail in developers? Bring a few of the envelopes with you. Before you get on the plane drop them in the nearest mailbox and then you won't have to worry about them. I too had heard that carry on x-rays are better for the film and not to put them in the checked baggage under any circumstances.
