Ok I am a little confused. Can someone please explain to me how I can rent a DVC timeshare villa from a renter ( i am not a DVC member ). My family and I are looking about renting a villa and I really don't understand the system. We are all new to this so I hope that I am posting this on the right board. I am a new to this website. Please explain the "points" system to me. We have a family of 4 adults and 2 children ( mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and 2 kids) but we all do not have to be in the same room. We were going to stay at a value resort but do not feel like this is enough room for us especially with no kitchen. Thank you in advance.:confused3 :confused3

Thank you Mike. My husband and I read over your thread and we are just wondering about the price still. Maybe we are a little on the slow side :rotfl2: or something but we don't understand how we will know how much it is per week. If someone could please explain I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again.

Hi there,

On the of this page there is a link to DVC points chart you need to look at it and decide what resort and time of year you want to go. You can then work out how many points you will need per room per day.

To add to Scott's comments, after you determine how many points you will need to rent, you can figure the average rental price is $10 per points. Compare that with the rack rate if you were to book the same room via Disney's reservation system and you will get an idea of your potential savings.

i still do not see the link about the conversion of points. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

At the Top of the page there's a link titled DVC Point Charts. It's near the upper right corner. There you will find point charts and a lot of useful information. Enjoy!

I think now I finally understand it.
Thank you. Hopefully this will be affordable for my family. Lookin forward to planning

When do you want to go? DVC members make their reservations at 7 to 11 months out. If you want to go in the near future, you will have a difficult time getting the reservation you want. You need to plan a long time out to get a DVC reservation.

Also, you won't have the same cancellation policy that Disney might have. The member might not allow any cancellation at all and you could be out whatever you have already paid the member.

You can't confirm the reservation. You can't add Magical Express. You can't add the dining plan. The member has to do all of this for you.

You won't have daily housekeeping unless you pay for it. You won't get extra towels unless you pay for them.

The biggest thing to remember is that you are dealing with an individual and they set all the rules. Disney won't get involved in any manner.

You can save money and get a great vacation for a lot less than you would wind up paying Disney directly, but you will also lose a lot of control over the reservation. You have to make the decision to accept that or not.

Deb,
Thank you for the extra information. We are planning to go right after Christmas this year in 08 . Arriving at WDW on Dec 27 and staying through Jan 3. I understand after reading in great detail last night all of the stipulations and what nots. This definitely sounds like a good idea for us. We are waiting to see if my parents are going to go with us or not before asking if there is anyone out there wanting to rent points for that time of year. I know that Christmas season is a busy time of the year for Disney so i understand that it may be difficult to actually rent something that time of year. But we will definitely try. On thing we want is Magic Your Way tickets with Park Hopper option and the dining plan so we will have to take this into consideration. Thanks again. Can't wait till December. It's been too long:cool1:

If you are looking at Dec 27 through Jan 3, you need to have a member in your pocket right now and make that reservation as soon as possible. If you wait too long, you will be too late. You might still be able to get something, but you might not get all the days you need at the resort you want. You picked a very popular time with DVC members.

Most people are making reservations for just that time period RIGHT NOW. You might want to go on over the rent trade board and post what you want. The longer you wait, the less likely you will get anything, since that is THE BUSIEST time to book. It is also the busiest at the parks, so be prepared for that as well.

The MYW tickets and dining plan don't really come into play. You can reserve the dining plan via the person you rent from. They will arrange it for you, but you must pay for it at the time you check in to the resort. The MYW tickets will have to be purchased on your own from the several places those are available.

Just some musings -- I know the per point is the standard that we continue to use but, as this poster points out, it's very difficult for a non-DVCer to understand. I've always wondered why we don't just ask a price like any other vacation home rental? If I posted -- Beach Club Villa one bedroom check in 12/28 and check out 1/2 for $2,500 the renter could easily compare that to the rack rate quote with tax from Disney of $3,612. That would also be more than the "$10 per point" that would have been $2,000. This type of pricing would also allow people who really can't use an already made reservation to "sell" reservations with weekends. If I went "per point" for 12/25-12/31 I'd have to charge $3,100 against Disney's $3,612. Maybe not worth it....but I could just cut my losses and say, Reservation for $2,800....or $2,850 or any other price point.

If I rent a summer cottage on Cape Cod for a week they don't charge "per point" or most times not even per day. I don't have to use multiple charts to calculate points for weekday vs. weekend and then multiply each point by $10 or $11 or $12.......just seems like it makes it unnecessarily difficult.

Also, a reminder to the original poster, there really is no system and no one to go to with a problem. These are purely transactions that you make with an individual person and you and that person come to agreement on how the transaction will work -- cancellation policy, change policy, etc.
