A little confused about add-ons...

We are probably going to be purchasing AKV very soon, but I have some questions about add-ons. (1) If later we wanted to purchase points at HHI would that become another "home" resort? (2) Can we book there 11 months out? (3) And what are the advantages/ disadvantages to buying add-ons resale?

(1) yes.
(2) yes, for those HHI pts. but no, you can't book HHI at 11 months with AKV pts (or vice-versa.)
(3) adv. - might be cheaper (might not). if you want a different UY month for stays at HHI, you can buy a resale with a different UY month with fewer than 160 pts.

disadv. - more complicated to add to your master contract with the same member number (assuming it is the same UY - if they are not under the same member number, you can't pool pts for a single night to book at the 7 month window without using up the single annual transfer for BOTH contracts.) might cost more if the resale contract is stripped. takes longer to be able to close on the contract and use your new pts (unless DVC direct doesn't have pts - and needs to put you on a waitlist.)

Yes it would become another home resort. however you can only use the points you buy in at HH at the 11 month window. So if you bought 160 points at AKV and 100 points at HH. For example you want to spend Christmas at HH then at the 11 month window you can book but only using the 100 points you have at HH not any of the points from AKV. If you want to use those points they can only be used at the 7 month mark. As for buying resale I don't know too much about that so I will let another post to that.

Yes But if you are going to AKV or HHI then you might as well book what you can at the 11 month window then shoot for the rest at the 7 month window. Otherwise, you can use all your points at the 7 month mark to book anywhere.

I agree with disDaydreamer, use should take advantage of the 11 month home advantage and make reservations at either at 11 months, then you can see about changing at the 7 month mark...at least you have either a great HHI vacation or a AKLV vacation for the points you have available.

Yes, but only if it's an add-on contract. If you purchase from Disney it will automatically be an add-on.

If you purchase resale, get the same use year month and then it can be combined with your current contract and becomes an add-on.

If you purchase resale and get a different use year month, then they are two separate contracts and points cannot be directly combined to use at the 7-month window. A different use year month becomes both a totally separate contract, AND has it own membership number.

O.K. so that really does make a difference. Thank you for the info. We will concentrate on the membership now, but if we start feeling that we need add-ons, I may be back with more questions. I was just curious because HHI is actually much closer to us than Disney and would make a great "home" for us to run too for shorter stays.
