Just received a letter from our dentist surgery, informing us that major changes are happening to the NHS dental service.

And they have evaluated these changes and have decided the best way to provide care is outside the NHS.

So have given us 2 plans to choose from, £9 or £12 a month each.

And this all starts from 1st April, given us 4 weeks to find a new dental practice.

DD can still go free of charge.

We have been with this dental practice for many years.


So out come the yellow pages to find a new dentist.

I wish that was all we had to pay

For our 6 month check up it is €30 each and if anything has to be done
the at least €50

i was told i need a rootcanal at less €400 which i would have to go to Dublin for
I am waiting to see if it settles


Children get the free school dentist which is a joke

We've just been told that from 1st April the kids can no longer have free dental treatment.

If people can't afford to pay, we'll have a generation of kids with horrid teeth

The price you pay at the dentist is expensive, my friend needed a filling, in the end the tooth had to be pulled out, and guess how much the extraction cost.!!!!

So paid £££ for the filling, x-ray, injection etc etc.

The extraction was £5.

So i think i will get all my teeth out and have dentures, save money in the long run

We've had exactly the same thing with our dentist. I've found out that there are only 3 dentists taking on new NHS patients in the area and they all say they'll probably go down the same route soon- so our only options are to join the private scheme, look further afield or have no dentist! Annoying isn't it....

That's happened in Leeds and Lincoln too, all the dentists around here seem to be going private and I really can't afford to pay for the insurance at the moment.

my dentist practise did this to me too, i now pay £14 a month but dont have to pay for treatment etc, its a pain though as I only go twice a year and still have to pay monthly

I think thats a pretty good deal!

Our dentist changed from NHS to private and we now pay monthly. The service has improved dramatically as the NHS practice was so over subscribed! and I think its much better than the previous system. My son is still free...

We didnt like the idea of it either, but actually its worked out much better for us.

We still have an NHS dentist though I am told he is the only one left in a 50 mile radius. We are very lucky but I expect to get a similar letter very soon myself

Ours is still NHS for the time being but they no longer send reminders when your next check up is due so if you forget and go over the 12 month limit you could easily end up off their NHS list and be forced to go private with them.

That's actually a pretty good price. Make sure you read the Ts&Cs to check what is covered.

The dentist we use offers DenPlan which is a monthly payment scheme. The price is determined by numerous factors such as your age and the state of your teeth. It's expensive but at least we are covered.

For our children, we just have to pay each time we visit.

Personally, I think we should just scrap NHS dentists altogether - unless the government offers them universally.

The new dental contract seems to prohibit dentists treating patients both on the NHS and Privately so they have to choose which route they take. We've been lucky that ours has always treated us on the NHS BUT he has another couple of weeks to decide which way he's going! Watch this space!

We had the same letter last week but luckily found a new NHS dentist that had only just opened about 5 miles away.
Considering I am lucky in that I usually only pay the absolute minimum for my check-ups, I begrudged paying minimum of £8 a month to stay on my existing dentist's books. My new dentist practice is only doing NHS work so hopefully they will not suddenly go private too!
