My name is Heather. My husband and I have 4 kids. Our oldest two are on the spectrum. Our 18 year old has severe Autism. He has extremely limited communication skills and gets self-injurious when he gets too anxious or tantrums. We are currently looking at getting in home behavior modification sessions for him since he is no longer capable of attending a program. He is 6'4" and over 250 lbs. He is our gentle giant in many ways since he adores babies and pets. Our second oldest is 16 and she between the HFA and Asperger's part of the spectrum. He goes to regular high school and attends some special classes. Some of her program is limited but she does pretty well. Her main deficits are social/emotional and she has some major auditory processing problems. Our youngest two are "typical" (do we even know what that is? lol) We have an 11 year old and a 9 year old.
We live in the Kansas City area but we lived most our lives in southern california and we were major Disneyland AP fanatics. When we moved out to the midwest we found out that it was cheaper and more conducive for us to make our family trips to WDW. Our oldest can't really be out of the house for more than 2-3 hours on a regular basis due to anxiety, etc. issues. However, he will actually tolerate a plane ride for Disney! He learned how to communicate (via PECS) going to Disneyland and he would use his book at the park to tell us where he wanted to go.
So needless to say I am grateful for Uncle Walt (
) and his vision.
I have been a member for a good number of years but haven't been too active due to other commitments. However, I have lurked from time to time and have always been grateful for the information this board provides on so many occasions.
I hope I didn't get anyone upset with my previous post.
