A dumb Southwest Questions

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I really dont fly this airline much. But just looked on their website and some flights opened up for a day we could do, the fare is the "internet special", its says its for one way travel only. Could I book 2 flight segments of 1 way each nonstop to make it a round trip or is it one way only?, no return? I also see it says you cant change anything and that is the one problem, the one ds might not come but I am thinking of doing his reservation seperately since he is 18.TIA

For our trip in April we have two one way tickets. I booked our return first because the flight down for $59 was unavailable. Then we ended up changing by one day so I booked a one way for the flight down. You will end up with two reservation numbers this way.

When you select your travel cities, make sure to select Round Trip. Then, you will select two one-way fares that will make your round trip.

Southwest is great about letting you change flights. You can change things, and even rebook for lower fares without penalty. I'm not sure about cancelling the flight... I'm tempted to say that you can just get a credit, and just use that towards a future flight. Another SWA expert will chime in with a definitive answer on that one.

When you book with Southwest, their rates quoted are one way, so if your trip down is say 3/1 and the rate for the time you want to go is $69.00 that is the cost for that leg of the trip, then if you are coming back on 3/6 and there is no internet rate for that date only a promotiona rate at $99.00 then the cost of the round trip flight would be $168.00 plus taxes and fees.
The one thing I love about Southwest is that you are able to make changes, if the change involves a lower rate or if you have to cancel one of your passengers you are give a credit that is good for one year from the date you booked your trip. So if you book the airfare for your son today, and a month from now he decides not to go, you can cancel his reservation and you will have a credit that will be good for a year from today.

Does anyone know if that credit is available for the purchaser or just the passenger? We (my department) purchase tickets for grad recruiting. If the student decides not to visit we usually have to eat the ticket costs because most airlines won't let us make a change to another passenger. Just wondering who gets the credit at SW. If we could get a credit and use it for another passenger I'd instruct my staff to book SW first if available.

I believe you are looking at something telling you that for the low price, you are only getting a 1-way ticket.

You are not seeing something saying you must buy a 1-way ticket and can never return.

Personally, I try to always book OW tickets with SW. It gives you maximum flexibility to change your ticket if a lower fare comes out or you need to adjust the itinerary. If you think one member of your party might cancel or need a different itinerary, I would do them on a separate reservation.

I also do the same thing as Rpsemont with OW's and SW. I find it much easier to make any necessary changes if the ressie's are OW.

Thanks. I tried to locate the answer on SW's site but just couldn't find it. That will give us a little relief. We always have at least one student change their mind after we purchase their ticket.
