A disappointing Boma experience.

I love Boma, I won't lie. I've been there many times and we have had a few off days, where the food just didn't seem right or service was nonexistent. But, for the most part we have enjoyed every meal there and even the off-nights were still better than eating some place else. The last time we were there they ran out of the new dessert, banana cream cannolis, and my DH asked the Chef is there were any in the back and he said no. About 15 minutes later he showed up at our table with four of the cannolis on a plate that said "have a magical evening" in chocolate.

I am really sorry to hear about all the bad experiences. We have never had one at Boma, but have had similar at other restaurants. I honestly have to say when the service/seating is handled that badly its hard to have a good meal afterwards....but it sounds like an end of the day buffet issue.

We'll be a Boma Friday and I hope everything goes as well as it has for us in the past.

I was at Boma's in January with my parents, grandparents & brother and we went to Boma's at the last minute. We did wait awhile to be seated but it was packed and our server was okay or at least he wasn't rude or slow. My brother & father & myself enjoyed it but my mother & grandmother did not. They are not into trying anything that they cannot identify. We enjoyed the ginger carrot soup(we got the recipe and my brother made it at home!) and the chicken chowder and the ribs(which had just the right amount of heat. But most of the other items were americanized to a point. We were on the dining plan but didn't notice a difference.

I am heading back at the end of the month with my husband and since we are staying at AKL we will be trying both breakfast & dinner at Boma's. Hoping for the best!

Gosh, that's too bad you had such a disappointing experience at Boma. We've had dinner there at least 7-8 times and never been displeased with either the food or the service. I think it's one of the best buffets I've ever experienced in terms of the foods being kept at the proper temps and also making sure that the selections are refilled when they need to be.

Only a couple of 'disappointments' in regards to the food ~~ We prefer the nut-encrusted salmon and somehow usually end up there on a night when it's the bbq salmon instead! Good, but just not *quite* as good
Also I was so disappointed last week when I found they'd changed the way they prepare the banana bread pudding ~~ the new version wasn't anywhere near as good as the one they used to serve.

I had dinner at Boma's on Tues. 9/5 and was disappointed also in the bread pudding change. I was looking forward to this dessert and was not happy with the change. I mentioned this to the server and she agreed. She said they had a new Chef that wanted to add her touch to the recipes and no
one liked the change to the bread pudding. I had noticed some subtle changes in some of the dishes also.

I have to admit, we love Boma. Yes, of course the food is African Americanized yet so is every other kind of fare served at the park. Biergarten, Alfredos, Bistro de Paris....they ALL are americanized in certain regards. We're big on dining, we live 5 minutes outside of Manhattan and know food pretty well and we've never been disappointed by Boma. As for the service the buffet makes service very difficult for the staff I'm sure. We've never had a problem at Boma however at Cape May Cafe we had almost the exact same situation. Some servers just aren't the best and some nights are off. If I had been you I wouldn't want to go back as I refuse to try Cape May Cafe again, however I LOVE BOMA!!!

Sorry this happened to you! I would have been starving if I had to wait that long to eat. I really enjoy Boma for breakfast, but definately could pass on dinner.

I hope they get enough *comments* on the bread pudding so the chef goes back to the 'old' recipe. When something works and is popular why change it?
My DD didn't care for the change to the Chocolate Mousse Crunch ~~ these used to be individual-sized, a little crunch wafer topped with mousse. Now they serve chocolate mousse in a big bowl with crushed-up crunch on top....not nearly the same! We did pick up a little pack of the individual sized ones packaged with zebra domes at Mara one night though

WOW we have eaten there many times and never had a problem. Maybe try earlier in the evening so the food is fresher if that makes any sense.

You know, that could be a reason why my DH and I liked it so much. Both of our ADRs were early in the evening, within an hour of Boma's opening for dinner. Our first ADR was scheduled for 5:30 but we were early and seated immediately. Our second was 4:40 and we arrived on time but had to wait about 10 minutes. We usually eat dinner around 5:30-6:00 at home, so that's normal "dinner time" for us.

I think the less then stellar food reviews have been explained by the New chef. Why disney always switches them around drives me crazy.

We too had an abysmal service experience at Boma and found the food to be mediocre at best. You aren't alone...we were sorry we wasted our time.

Does that mean TJ isn't there anymore?! DH and I were there in March and when TJ found out I was a vegetarian, he prepared a special platter for us, as well as deep fried oreos for dessert. It was by far the best Boma experience we ever had.

We will be back on Sept. 22nd (for DH's birthday) and I was hoping we would see TJ again, but we might not be so lucky this time. What a bummer!!

I appreciate all these reviews as it is obvious that a place will not be "great" every single time to every single person. I am still looking forward to trying Boma in Nov 2007 and will make my ADR's ASAP!

I was VERY optimistic about eating at Boma (and tried for 5 weeks, calling daily, to get our 4:50pm ressie).

What a complete disappointment. Don't get me wrong...the food wasn't bad, it just wasn't "GREAT" in my mind. I didn't know what I was eating (contrary to what I'd read, there weren't chefs standing around to explain what the dishes were). Bananna Salmon? Not for me! And the prime rib was just okay...no choice on which cut I got (prefer Med Rare and there was no pink in it). The desserts were good, but nothing else stood out for me. It was nothing more than a buffet with unusual items. But as for tasting incredibly good? Nope!

The ressie in front of us was asked things like, "are you celebrating anything special? Any food allergies?" etc. We were just seated and no real interaction/service. I found this type of inconsistancies throught Disney but I guess I expected more from the AKL. We were disappointed in the lack of service during our stay, Boma included.

We were a party of 8 (6Ad/2 kids 7,3). Two of the adults thought it was okay, 4 LOVED it and my two picky eating kids were THRILLED there, which is funny because it's supposed to be adventurous eating.

We were greeted properly, asked about allergies, and our server did his job but didn't do anything special.

We loved the soups, especially the crab soup. The prime rib was just okay, but that's not what I was there for so after a taste, I just moved on. The milk tart on the dessert pod was awesome.

For kids it's great because they have PB&J, plain noodles, plain meatballs, french fries. chicken and chocolate chip cookies and fruit including juicy watermelon slices. Plus they can eat anything else they want.

My mom didn't like it much though, so it really does depend on taste/mood.

Afterwards, we went up to the Savanna to watch the animals and the sunset. It was a nice ending.

I have to say we went to Boma in Sept. and we were all very disappointed in the food. All 6 of us. I also had read so many wonderful reviews we were really looking forward to it. I was so looking forward to the zebra domes, really I don't see what all the fuss was about. It is pretty bad when a casino buffet in Atlantic City is better.

I am still going to keep my ADR's at Boma's even after reading these reviews....I am a very picky eater and my DH is more the adventurous type so I think this will work out.....our ADR is for 4:30pm ...I think that it will make a difference in the freshness of the food compared to the last seating of the evening

Thanks for sharing your experience, sorry it was not a good one. Luckily DH and I have never had a bad experience at Boma and it's his favorite restaurant. We're looking forward to our meal in January, hopefully it will be as good as I remember it!

Sounds like you just went on a bad night. My mom's friend went there last week and they absolutely LOVED it... said the food and atmosphere was awesome.
