I think it is true that a lot of the 'middle' of the road people don't really respond. And everything seems to be a controversy lately!

I just don't like when someone has an opinion they start personal attacks or accuse the different opinion as being cruel or heartless. There are logical thinkers and emotional thinkers...and those seem to be the only ones who post on some.

I've found a lot of antipathy, both here and "IRL", for any sense of compromise -- any suggestion that things could be one way for one person and a different way for someone else, and still be okay.

I think that there used to be certain members here who would stir the pot with their very extreme views on purpose. I was a lurker for a very long time before I joined and after those certain people were banned I started to post.

I also think that a lot of the middle of the road opinions get buried in pages of arguments.

I don't even know how many times I've written a response and then didn't post because I was afraid of "bullies". My feelings get hurt very easily, so I don't like to get in the middle where I could be bashed.

I've seen a few "middle of the road" comments, they just don't get any replies

I think that people tend to post on threads involving passions, positive or negative. I am a middle of the road kind of person, but will fight to the end in some situations, usually involving children or old people.

I tend to just post whatever comes to mind, sometimes without regard for spelling or grammar. I mean it's supposed to be "just for fun", not an English class. You get a thought and type it - sometimes you hit the wrong key.

I get so tired of the many posters who feel the need to criticize every typo. They start threads about their pet peeves, which always include spelling and grammar.

Then you have the psychologist wannabes - I'm starting to think a pre-requisite for joining the board these days is a double major in English and Psychology (whether those degrees are real or imagined).

I think its because each side feels the need to assert their view to those who feel the opposite, so they are the most vocal. Like a pp mentioned, a thread, especially a contraversial one, gets tons of views yet its the same posters on it hashing it out.
