A couple of questions about DVC

First, is there an FAQ anywhere with all of the information regarding resale etc. of DVC? We just got home from Saratoga and sat through the timeshare presentation. We currently own with Interval International, but we are selling it since they dropped Disney. We are very interested in owning at AKL but we have to sale our other timeshare first.

I came here and started reading about 'resale'. Do you still get all of the benefits of buying with Disney if you buy resale? What is the difference? We were looking to do the 100 point plan but I keep seeing people say they bought 50 points to 'get their foot in the door'...what exactly does that mean in terms of buying with Disney?

Also, we had a guide show us around but I keep reading about referral incentives. Are we 'locked in' to that guide since he showed us everything or could we still use a referral?

Thank you so much for any information you can give me. I know these are probably dumb questions but I'm very new to this DVC ownership program but definately want to get in!! Disney is SO addicting!!

here's one.

yes.

What is the difference?

generally speaking, it can be a lot cheaper (especially at SSR) and it gives you the opportunity to buy fewer than 150 pts...OTOH, it can take longer and if you go too cheap, disney can buy the contract and you have to start over.

if you start with 50 pts resale, you can add-on later with DVC for another 50 pts (or whatever) if you want. the pts may still cost more if you buy direct, but for smaller contracts, the resale closing costs can offset the lower prices (direct add-ons with DVC have zero closing costs.)

We currently own with Interval International
Just to clarify this a little---II is an exchange company, not a resort developer/manager. Your resort is affiliated with II for external exchange, but you own at a specific resort (or possibly within a resort system).

If your goal is to stay at Disney, and only Disney will do, you are wise to consider owning via resale rather than continuing to try to play the exchange game.

What resort do you own at, it may help us to better understand you situation and how best to direct you. Also, were you successful trading in before? Keeping that resort AND looking at DVC alternatives might be your best bet unless you only want to vacation at Disney, possibly for less points.

I own at a ranch in Bandera, Texas which includes a membership with trading rights through Interval International. I did just trade into saratoga springs for the trip we just got back from but now I'm getting conflicting information on whether or not I can still do Disney with II. They are still listed on the II resort directory and I called II yesterday and the lady I spoke with said I could still get Disney. I'm very confused! Any insight?

Very doubtful---there might be a few straggler weeks here or there, maybe a cancellation, but almost all of them are going to RCI.

I would consider hanging on to your resort that trades through II (Interval International) since the economy is so awful right now for timeshares and real estate.

You could buy some DVC points resale at SSR for an absolute bargain with the economy the way it is right now. I added on 100 SSR points resale to our DVC points a few months ago for $71 a point - :) The Timeshare Store was great to work with (as usual).

We sometimes trade our other timeshares through Interval for a week at a nice Marriott or Sheraton in Orlando when we want to do other things besides Disney, and then tack on extra days with our DVC points to stay onsite.

DVC is trading in RCI right now. As others have said, there might be a few straggler/cancellations come up in II, but I wouldn't count on it.

There are basically 2 resorts there though I guess technically one has two components. I'm assuming you're at the Flying L and not PVC. PVC is in both RCI and II while the Flying L is only II. I'm doubting PVC would pull DVC in RCI anyway.

Dean your correct, I own at only the ranch. So the general assumption I'm getting here is that I should just hold onto the current one I have and just buy a very small (25-50 point) contract within DVC. I will start looking into that. It wouldn't be a bad idea. I do love the flexibility of II and the trip we just went on was 08s (contract is biennial) so we're actually able to plan a new one in Oct. of this year.

Don't forget that by owning your II timeshare and being a full member of II, you are eligible to use the cash Getaways, too. We've got a cash Getaway booked at Sheraton Vistana Villages (very nice Starwood vacation club resort) in a 2 bedroom for $450 for the whole week in the fall and we're also adding some nights at SSR. Owning both DVC points and combining with II exchanges and cash Getaways works out quite nice for us.
