Well it had to happen sooner or later
There I was with my awesome lanyard and loaded with my awesome pins the kind that most people would sell their small children for. Strutting through DTD like I owned the place.
When amidst the entire hardcore pin traders group out popped a small little girl about 10 or so, very excitedly she asked if she could see my pins I said yes you most certainly may.
Well she looked at it for a few moments, she had that trader pin in her hand all ready to do the deal with, but first she needed to find a pin to trade for.
After about a minute, she sighed and smiled and said you really got nice pins mister but, not really anything cool
Hold the phone sister, why wait a minute missy I said pointing to my lanyard this is Wet Paint its a prized collectable pin, this is a managers champion its a cast pin hello!!!, and this is the haunted mansion dangler, do you know what this goes for on Ebay?
She just smiled and said well yea they are nice, but you got no princesses or Pluto you know neat stuff like me she said while holding her little pink lanyard out for me to see, it was loaded with princess, Pluto and Goofy pins. All rack pins mind you. You got the big old stuff she said.
Well Ill be I was just You got nothinged by a child, but then as I was getting back up, (I always bend down for kids) My top Tinkerbell mystery pin from the princess event popped out from under my collar.
OOOOOOOOOOhhhhhh said the wee one; you got a cool Tinkerbelly pin! Will you trade that one? I looked at her lanyard and smiled and said naaaa you got ghetto pins girlfriend Relax ladies I did not do that.
I smiled and said well it was a mystery pin, and its worth a lot more then the pins you have on as her smile turned into a frown But I said since you reminded me of something very important that I had almost forgotten, and if you promise me that you will keep it and not trade I would like to give you this pin to you as a gift from one pin pal to another.
Well the frown turned into a smile, she said she would not trade it or part with it, and it would be her favorite pin from now on.
This trade was made off to the side of all the commotion at the trading areas, no one knows about it except her and me, no manager was there to go awwwww and award me the highly coveted CTT with Donald and Mickey pin, and I didnt get points from Donna for being extra nice like when I put the toilet seat down at nights. No sir this was a simple little ole pin trade that made two people feel very good.
And what was it that she reminded me of? Well several things like one persons holy grails are another persons traders, its not about collecting the most sought after pins for fame or fortune, its about having fun with your pin pals, its about making a child smile, its about helping a friend get their holy grail. I remembered that you cant always trade up sometimes you need to trade down to help the balance of things, and above all what goes around comes around. Thats what its all about.
Because you see for the rest of the night I had this tingling feeling in my stomach, (Donna thought it was SARS) and I felt really good, and for the first time ever I traded, and was finally able to complete three sets that have been sitting around for over a year waiting for a pin or two, and since I refuse to frame them until they are complete I was driving Donna nuts with them.
FYI the little girl was named Kasey either with a K or a C not sure she was here on vacation with her mom and dad, she had a brother that was a pain, but she tolerated him anyway because they were in Disney, her dad was mad because the food cost so much and was going to make them all eat tuna and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which was fine by her because she liked both, and on and on she went. This is one of the reasons why I like kids.
