Thank you. One site has the V500 listed for $199 but comes with Photoshop Elements. Wonder if that is worth it?

I am still looking for the best (or easiest) way to scan about 100 rolls of negatives. Epson's V500 (and now the V600 at $250) look pretty good. The V700 offers twice the capacity/speed and much greater D-Max at a higher price. The ultimate goal is to put them on HDTV so I only need 1920 pixels, about 1200 ppi or about 2MP.

The other option is to "scan" with the duplicator that I use for slides and use software like VueScan to process the "scans". Either way, VueScan or SilverFast is recommended over the software that is included with the scanner (for negatives only, slides are much easier).

Ed- Wow- these are just great. I love the canoe shot as well. The slides held up very well- makes me wonder if/where any of my digital files will exist in 30- 40- 50 years. I have been scanning some of my old family slides from the 50's and they still look very good.

Dawn- I will give a +1 for the Epson V500. Very nice flatbed scanner that has a built-in illuminator and comes with brackets than can scan 2x 35mm strips- 4x mounted slides or 2x 120 film exposures at a time. It does a good job for what I need it for. Most of everything in the Film Section on my Flickr page was scanned with one.

I believe PSE6 is bundled by Epson with the V500. It was included with ours which, IIRC, was purchased from B&H.

First - the pictures are wonderful - how wrong is it that I really enjoy someone else's old vacation pictures?


Second - after scanning in a number of slides I had from my days in the Army/Europe from the early 70s I could relate to the following:

first, that the images had held up as well as they have

One thing I did notice - the Kodak Ektachrome and Kodachrome slides still look good and had very little color shift. The 'unidentified slides' (unknown film manufacturer) I shot have shifted slightly and the 'tourist' (developed) slides that I bought of locations that I visited had shifted almost to the point that they were unusable (must have been East German film ).

I had the same experience. The Kodak's could have been shot and processed yesterday, and I would not have known the difference - especially those processd by Kodak. I had some others by other film mfg that were horrible. I had experimented with a 35mm motion picture film, "5247" at that time and they were faded/color-shifted to the point of being nearly unidentifiable.

I have not gotten to the Fuji Velvia shots yet, but expect them to have held up well, too. Velvia 50 is my all-time favorite slide film, with K64 a close second.

There *is* a holder, which has a pin that fits in a little hole in the scanner to make sure it is alinged correctly. You can scan four mounted slides at a time.

Ed, just listen to WDWRadio's Podcast this morning and it talked about those Davy Crockett Canoes. Never saw them they must have been fun.
Also think that EPSON V500 sounds like good gift for wife and mother in law (she was a big slide user in the day)
