This is my first post on DIS, although I have been reading these boards for a few years now. There is a surplus of great info on this site! I have a quick question...
I finally decided on a vacation home for our upcoming trip, when I called to reserve it he asked for the three digits on the back of my credit card, is this normal? :confused3

Hi

I have bought and paid for thing over the telephone and have been asked for the last 3 digits on the back of the signature strip on numerous occasions.

Hope this helps as I have never really thought about it before.

We always have to get the CVV code (card verification value), or in the case of AMEX the CID, when we make bookings, most of our suppliers require it.
I would not be alarmed about it. Most online retailers ask for that code as well when you make a purchase. It's supposed to be a method of fraud prevention.

Thanks, I feel better now.. I've been a credit card holder for 10 years and never was asked for the CVV number before.. odd!

Most of the doctor bills we pay with a credit card require the code. I'm not too happy about giving it out, but what can you do?

My understanding is that this code is not sent electronically along with your CC#, hence, anyone hacking into a computer transaction would not get the code and then not be allowed to use the CC# online for fraudulant purposes.

Hope that helps!

You should be happy they did. This is for your protection, to prevent someone from fraudulently using your card. Say if they got the number off a credit card statement.
