9 Days of Princess Hair - a June 2010 trip report - update 9/24 the drive home

We did not feel rushed at all at the Epcot Character Spot. They made sure to get tons of pics & that we were happy with each character!

I felt the same way. I would say that they were efficient, but I didn't feel rushed at all. I have seen lots of people comment on the Theme Parks board that they feel rushed here. I am glad that you felt like you got all of the pictures you wanted too!

Loved the character spot photos, and I am so glad you got to do Soarin. Now you have me curious as to just how long this princess hair is going to last.I am glad that your girls like to have their hair up. They must really get a lot of hairspray in there, for it to still look so good. I am sure they felt cooler too with their hair off of their neck!

I am glad we rode Soarin' too! I was really nervous about it - as I have said before I don't ride anything that moves faster than I can walk. I wasn't sure I would like Soarin' but in the end the whole family LOVED it!

They didn't use a lot of hairspray, but they did put in a lot of gel. I touched up DD6's hair Friday morning with some hairspray that I brought just for that purpose. I think having their hair up did help a little with the heat. It also helped keep the food out  and kept DD4 from catching hers in the mister fan (which she did at Animal Kingdom the day before we did BBB :sad2:)

I am glad you enjoyed Soarin and it didn't make you motion sick....we had issues with Soarin' :sad2:

Poor DD getting her knees skinned...that can ruin so much fun!! :sad1:

I did enjoy Soarin'! You know I was really nervous. ;)

I was so sad that DD scraped up her knees. :sad1: I packed so many bandaids, yet somehow they didn't manage to get into the park bag that morning. :sad2: I am happy that Soarin' got her over it though!

Next, we went to Imagination which was also a walk-on. The kids like this ride (I still miss the original :sad2:). Now, I have to tell you that personally I think the skunk smell is a complete illusion. If you close your eyes and inhale as you enter the room, I don't smell skunk – I smell coffee. I think the “skunk” smell is a Figment of your Imagination! ;)

We then headed straight to our ADRs. MIL and I took DD6, DD4 and DS1 to Biergarten, DH, FIL and the nephews went to Marrakesh, and DC decided to pass on both of those restaraunts and ate in Sunshine Seasons. I enjoyed the chicken, roasted potatoes, and bratwurst at Biergarten. The kids were cranky and difficult and I am not quite sure why. :headache: I know they all ate some bread and the girls ate some chicken. I enjoyed the show, but it was shorter than I expected. DS1 and I did go down and do the polka but the pictures are on MIL's camera. DH had the vegetable couscous and bastilla at Marrakesh. He said later that the food there wasn't as good as he remembered and it is not a must-do on future trips.

We were all done eating by 2 PM and I felt great about that as a departure time. However, there were still Test Track FP's to use and DH, FIL, and the nephews really wanted to ride. Since we had driven, we all wanted to leave together, so we waited for the guys to ride. Somehow, this took an hour!!!!!!!!! We finally left Epcot at 3 PM. Once again, I was feeling pretty cranky by this point. I hate just standing around in the heat!

Our plan for this day had been to take a break and then for DH and I to take the nephews into DHS for the Hyperspace Hoopla and then maybe stay for a 2nd Fantasmic! The kids all decided they would rather go to a waterpark than to SWW. DD6 was very excited to go swimming and I knew she would want to go underwater. I thought the idea of letting all the gel and pixiedust in her hair get into the pools at the waterpark was yucky, so I quickly washed her hair before we left. There was no way that DD4 was going to put her head in the water, so I left her hair alone.

Everyone except MIL and DS1 headed out to Blizzard Beach. However, since we left later due to the hairwashing, we never actually saw anyone else. :confused3 The good thing about a 4 PM arrival at a waterpark is that locker prices are discounted – we paid $1. :thumbsup2 DH took DD6 and headed for the wave pool while I took DD4 to Tikes Peak. She had a great time going down all the little slides. I then exchanged kids and took DD6 to Ski Patrol Training Camp. She liked the slides there. Then we went back and got DH and DD4 and returned where we all rode the Mogul Mania which was great fun! Finally, DD4 needed to take daddy over to show him “her slides” in Tike's Peak. By this point, it was almost 6 PM and they were starting to announce the park closing. Unfortunately, this would be our only trip to a waterpark. Lesson learned – for us right now, the waterparks & more tickets are a waste of money ($200 to spend 2 hours going on some kiddie slides and playing in a wave pool?!!). Our kids were perfectly happy in the POR pool. We will skip that addition to our tickets for a least the next few years.

We then made our way back to POR and had supper in Riverside Mill. Once again DH had the create-your-own pasta, a yogurt parfait, and some kind of juice. I had a create-your-own salad which was wonderful! I had chicken and lots of veggies on mine. They also did the dressing on the side for me which I loved because I don't use very much dressing. DD6 again got the kids chicken nuggets with applesauce and french fries. DD4 and DS1 shared from everyone at the table. With 13 people, there was plenty of food for them.

Again, we were in bed by 8 PM. And so ends day 3 with princess hair!

Biergarten – MIL paid for us oop - $68.98
Marrakesh – FIL paid for DH oop - $29.26
3 QS credits used at Riverside Mill, 19 remaining
Price for this meal if paying oop = $38.37
Total paid for dining plan (8 days) = $975.68
Total cost of meals if paying oop = $814.87
Money spent this day = $1 for locker, $5 tip for mousekeeping
Money available after 4 days = $670

Up next, Magic Kingdom day!

Somehow I missed your visit to the character spot! Great pictures!

Epcot sounds like fun, I'm glad you liked Soarin. Too bad about DD. Last time we were at disney DS fell out of the stroller smack dab on his head, and then broke open a glowstick and squirted it in his eye. :headache: The kid has never had to go to the doctor for a sick visit, but we visited the epcot first aid center twice!

I'm intrigued to see what princess hair looks like on day 9. :rotfl:

That does sound like an overpriced visit to a water park! Lesson learned, I guess!

Oh my! You have had some adventures with boo-boos! We didn't need to take DD4 to first aid, but I felt really bad for her. I will post some pictures later where you can see the big scabs on her knees a week later. :sad2:

We had planned to go to the waterparks at least 3 times and to take the nephews to Disneyquest one evening - none of that happened. We were usually just too tired and HOT to do anything besides hit the pool at POR.

Saturday, June 12 was our big Magic Kingdom Day!!! We had spent the morning here on Princess day, but the plan was to spend the whole day (with an afternoon break) here on Saturday! :cool1:

Once again, I was the first one up in our room. I got ready and left without anyone else waking up. I just love walking around POR in the early morning. :cloud9: On this morning, I walked over to Riverside Mill and bought 2 cinnamon rolls for the family to share for breakfast.

After breakfast, we took the bus to the Magic Kingdom. We arrived at the MK at about 8:30 AM. As we were pulling up to the bus stop, I realized that we forgot our camera. :guilty: DH offered to go back for it, but I really wanted him to stay with us. We got it when we returned for our break.

We found a spot right in front of the train station since none of us had ever seen the opening show before. The kids enjoyed playing with the hula hoops while we waited. The opening show was wonderful and I now understand what everyone means when they say that music makes them a little teary-eyed. “The most magical place on earth is here!” :woohoo: It is the BEST way to get “in the mood” to go into the Magic Kingdom.

Staying in front of the train station put us a little behind the crowds at rope drop, but not too far. I think I would have been more concerned if we were heading for Dumbo. Again, MIL went to get fastpasses and she took DS1 and got 3 for Space Mountain and 5 for Pooh (and she got the bonus Philharmagic ones here too). FIL took the nephews to ride Space and they were 1st in line but it was not yet running. They decided to wait.

DH and I took the girls on the Speedway. We had about a 5 minute wait since we were a little behind the crowd. DD6 complained most of the wait because she didn't think she was going to drive well enough and so wanted me to drive. I told her I drive everyday, but she can only drive at Disney! DD4 happily got in the car with DH and I basically gave DD6 no choice. Both of the girls did the steering while DH and I worked the gas pedal. Our ride was a little rough, but she did fine once we got going. The girls were very happy to get their “driver's license”! I just love all the little touches like this that only Disney would think to do. :thumbsup2

Next we met up with MIL and DS1 and went to Buzz which was a walk-on. We love this ride and I had planned to do it twice, but before I could say anything, the kids were in the strollers and we were moving. I guess I had everyone so well trained by this point they didn't even consider a 2nd ride!

As we passed the teacups, I saw that it was a walk-on and since we had missed it on Wednesday we rode it instead. The girls like this ride as long as we don't actually spin our teacup. This is the one ride DH doesn't do and not spinning our cup also makes it tolerable for me (I actually do OK with spinning – it is up and down that gets me!). MIL got a set of fastpasses for Splash while we rode.

By this point, DC and her kids had arrived (they aren't the rope drop type) and the nephews had finally ridden Space so we all met up at Aladdin. When we arrived at Aladdin, they were just loading – i.e. no wait. We walked up and told them our party size (9 people) and they told us to get on. This was our first ride on Aladdin this trip and I didn't realize that they assigned the carpets. :guilty: This means that I also didn't realize that there were entire carpets available when they sent us around. FIL, DD6, and DD4 got in the back of a carpet right in front of us. I, stupidly, assumed that this is what we needed to do also and DS1 and I got in the back of another carpet. DH and MIL realized our error, but were unable to communicate it to us before the ride started. So, to the nice couple who let us ride in the back of their carpet, I am sorry. :flower3: I won't make that mistake again. Once again we walked off to DS1 saying “more?”. He had a wonderful time and it was still a walk-on so we did it again – this time in our own carpet. :thumbsup2

From here, we went to Pirates which surprised us by being a total walk-on. We had skipped Pirates on our last few trips and I don't think I have been on it since Capt. Jack was added. The girls were a little nervous because they didn't know what to expect, but did fine. I enjoyed the “new-to-me” parts.

Next, we went to the Tiki Room where we missed the opening show as we arrived just as they opened the doors. This is another one where I really miss the original. I like Iago in the Aladdin movies, but he annoys me in this attraction. :confused3 For some reason, my DD6 was nervous in here as well.

Up next, lunch at Crystal Palace!

It was now about 11 AM and we decided to head over to Crystal Palace for our 11:35 ADR. MIL quickly got a set of FP for Big Thunder Mountain on the way and we arrived at Crystal Palace about 20 minutes early. DC had been able to get an ADR for the same time and again we were just hoping to get the tables close by. While we waited to be called in, we watched the Move It, Shake It parade. I really liked the music and it seemed like a really fun parade. We were called in right on time and seated with tables next to each other. :cool1:

Now, it may because we had the first lunch seating, but in my opinion, this was the BEST buffet of our trip. We had already eaten at Tusker house and 1900 Park Fare, but Crystal Palace beat them hands-down. DH and I both really enjoyed the salmon here. DH also remembers eating the curry noodles, but found them too spicy to eat too many. The kids primarily had macaroni and cheese and about 2 lbs of grapes each (my kids currently have an insatiable appetite for grapes). I apologize to anyone who ate at Crystal Palace later that day and wanted grapes – we may have eaten them all. I also had some roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and a salad. The desserts here were also very good. I think all of the kids made ice cream sundaes. DH and I both LOVED the chocolate chunk pecan squares – so yummy! :woohoo:

Of course, while we were eating, we had some visitors. Remember that we forgot our camera. These are some pictures that DC took.

The kids also joined in the little parade that they do here

Notice that in the above picture DS1 is barefoot. After getting his first every blisters on princess day, he now pretty much refuses to keep shoes on unless he is actively walking. :headache: The minute we sit him down, he kicks off his sandals. We thought maybe the sandals were getting small too and bought him some new Mickey crocs (for $32!!! :scared1:) and he kicked those off too. So, from this point in the trip forward, we will be engaged in a shoe battle. I don't like the idea of him being barefoot in public places, but I think I may have lost the battle more than I won it. :guilty:

As we were paying here, our server mentioned to us that we had only 1 adult TS left, but that there were 3 kids TS credits remaining. Now, we had eaten all of our meals together and neither our 4 or 6 year olds could have passed for an adult, so we knew there was an error. Our server reminded us to just talk to the concierge at our resort and it could be fixed.

Up next, will the girls ride Splash Mountain?

Yikes, I had this window up all day trying to find time to read it, and then you post another installment before I can read the first! Too speedy!

I would be so upset if I forgot my camera!

I can't wait to see the opening show. I've seen the DHS one but I wasn't crazy about it...it was fun to be there but I'm not crazy about DHS as is. Now I have to see all the others!

I've never actually been on the speedway. It sounds like you had fun though!

Your MIL seems to be quite handy with getting those fastpasses for yOu!

So cute that your DS asked to ride Aladdin again. I love when the babies ask to ride something again. How can you refuse? And asking is much much cuter than crying when you take them off which is what DS did, and I'm sure DD will scream, she has quite the temper to go with that red hair of hers!

That's awesome that pirates was a walk on! How great is that? I'm glad no one was scared of it!

I can actually see being scared in the room with all the audioanamatronic birds. In fact, I could see DS freaking out in there. Something to think about...

I love love love Crystal Palace! At least you got some great pictures, that one of DD6 is so cute! That's a lot of kids in those pictures!

Funny enough, DS was barefoot at Crystal Palace last time we went. He was 21 months, but we totally just forgot to put shoes on him. We're just so used to carrying him everywhere, and we must have taken his shoes off in the hotel room and never put them back on. So he was barefoot in the MK too. It's so hard fighting with babies about something so trivial, isn't it? They can be so very stubborn!

Hmm, that is very strange about the DDP credits. I hope that gets resolved smoothly.

Can't wait to see who rides splash!

I have Crystal Palace on my to-do list. Of course we have teens so Pooh, Tigger and Piglet have been "beneath" them! :lmao: Piglet is my mom's favorite character so when she goes with me, I plan to have Crystal Palace as one of our character meals!

I think it is TOTALLY unfair that you made it there 20 minutes before your reservation time!!! :rolleyes1

I would be so upset if I forgot my camera!

Yeah, I was disappointed. MIL and DC both had their cameras, but it takes so long sometimes to get pictures from other people.

I can't wait to see the opening show. I've seen the DHS one but I wasn't crazy about it...it was fun to be there but I'm not crazy about DHS as is. Now I have to see all the others!

I didn't even notice one at DHS. The best was Magic Kingdom, followed by Animal Kingdom. Go for those two first.

I've never actually been on the speedway. It sounds like you had fun though!

I would certainly skip it if I didn't have kids. With them, it is fun. Despite my DD6's worries, she has actually driven there before when she was 4.

Your MIL seems to be quite handy with getting those fastpasses for yOu!

She was AWESOME! It was so nice to not have to miss moments with the kids to run off and get fastpasses.

So cute that your DS asked to ride Aladdin again. I love when the babies ask to ride something again. How can you refuse? And asking is much much cuter than crying when you take them off which is what DS did, and I'm sure DD will scream, she has quite the temper to go with that red hair of hers!

Even if nobody else wanted to ride again, I was taking him back! He only asked for more on two rides the whole trip (Pooh and Aladdin) and he got it both times.

That's awesome that pirates was a walk on! How great is that? I'm glad no one was scared of it!

We were able to do a lot with very short waits, but Pirates was one of the most surprising for me. DH was absolutely shocked!

I can actually see being scared in the room with all the audioanamatronic birds. In fact, I could see DS freaking out in there. Something to think about...

Interesting...I didn't think about it like that. My DD6 gets nervous about anything, so I often tune her out a little. :rolleyes1

I love love love Crystal Palace! At least you got some great pictures, that one of DD6 is so cute! That's a lot of kids in those pictures!

DC took some nice pictures. Those are the only ones she has given us so far. I hope there are more. For the days that DC was with us, we were a party of 5 adults and 8 kids! Outnumbered! :scared1:

It's so hard fighting with babies about something so trivial, isn't it? They can be so very stubborn!

Absolutely! By the end of the week, he was so quick about it too. We would barely be in our chairs and he would be saying, "shoe, off". The girls got used to climbing under the tables before we left each meal to find their brother's shoes. :sad2:

I love Crystal Palace. Tell those silly teenagers to embrace the furry characters! They are soft and fuzzy.

We got there early because I was with a pack of ravenous people who kept skipping breakfast. ;) I often say that my kids eat like Hobbits. They have breakfast at 8, 2nd breakfast at 9:30, lunch at 11, 2nd lunch at 12:30, snack at 2:30, supper at 5:30 and by 7 PM are begging for food. It must run in the family because the nephews were similar. :confused3

Today is a happy day in our house. :yay: DS1 becomes DS2 today! It is also DH and my 10th anniversary! I just finished making DS's birthday cake, it is a train and came out pretty cute. I will try to post a picture later.

OK, back to the TR...

After lunch, we got fastpasses for Jungle Cruise and rode Splash with our fastpasses. DD4 was tall enough to ride, but decided to sit this one out with FIL and DS1. This one took a little courage for me to ride. In general, I don't like things that go up and/or down, but I also don't want to pass along my issues to my kids. This was DD6's first time on Splash and she was really nervous. I thought it might go better if I went on too and sat next to her. I had ridden Splash once before 10 years ago and rode many flume rides as a child because my mom loves them. I knew I COULD do it, I just wasn't so sure that I wanted to do it.

Luckily, with a party of 10, we filled an entire log. :) This was good because I was able to talk to DD6 during the ride and remind her (and myself) that it was a nice ride with a big slide at the end (Thanks SO much to those who recommended calling it a “slide” rather than a “drop”!!) She got faked out by some of the small drops, especially the next to last one! I have to admit, that one got me too.

I think the Imagineers who designed this ride were absolutely brilliant! :worship: I love how as you get to the final drop, the doors open and the castle is right there in front of you – just a beautiful view!! :lovestruc My thinking as we went down:
OK, here we go!
.
.
.
Look, it's the castle!!
.
.
.
Uh-oh, my hat is falling off!
.
.
.
Oh, we are down already.
.
.
.
Good thing I pulled my ponytail through my hat, it is still stuck.

The end of this ride is also just incredible. The music is just so happy and you can't help but leave this ride happy! :) On the way out, DD6 was so happy that we grabbed another set of Splash FP for later. MIL bought the ride picture. If I can get it from her, I will post it. We finally left close to our target time (about 1:30) with 37 fastpasses in hand! We made our way out to the buses and back to POR.

Up next, will anyone take a nap?

Firstly, Happy Birthday to your DS! :cake:
And Happy Anniversary to you and DH! I can't wait to see your DS's birthday cake! party:
I have to admit, I got really confused from reading threads where people refer to their first son DS1 and their second DS2, so I got really excited, thinking, "They're having another baby!" and then I thought about it and realized that wouldn't make your DS the SECOND boy...it really took me WAY too long to figure that out. I'll blame it on the heat. ;)

I avoid Splash because I hate being wet. Once my kids are big enough to ride it, I probably will, but until then I'm staying with the baby!

Really really smart to call it a "slide". I will definately remember that!

It's very cool that you filled a log. I could see why your MIL would buy that picture!

I'm glad DD6 liked it!

Ahhhh, so glad you went on Splash!! It is my happy place at MK!! The ending is the best!! I sing that song all day long!!!

I hope your DS had a great birthday!! I can't wait to see that cake!!

:lmao: Sorry I confused you. I find it a little confusing too that some folks number their kids and others use ages. Oh well.

DD and I were in the 3rd row on Splash, so we didn't get wet at all. DH and MIL were in the front. I would have to ask them if they got wet. Given that my DH kept purposefully walking through the fountains, he probably didn't mind if he did.

When we got back to our room, I mandated that everyone had to be quiet for one cycle of the “Must Do
Disney” show. By the time that was over, DH, DD4, and DS1 were asleep. :ssst: DD6, however, was begging to DO something. :hyper: I will admit that I was a little disappointed that she didn't fall asleep because I was enjoying the break in the A/C. But, I knew going in that it was really unlikely. So, I took her over to the quiet pool and we swam for about an hour. We then returned, got everyone up and ready and returned to the park at about 5 PM.

While we were sleeping, MIL took the nephews to DTD because they wanted more Lego sets. She also exchanged the girls' Minnies. I have already mentioned that the veil had come off of princess Minnie. On Saturday morning, the flower antenna came off of fairy Minnie. I have to say that I found that a little disappointing – to have two plush characters fall apart in less than 2 days! Anyway, I am happy that Disney has a good return policy and we were able to get them replaced. The new set were much better and are still intact more than a month later!

After Downtown Disney, the boys wanted to swim before returning to the park so they weren't ready to go when we were. We went ahead and got some supper at Columbia Harbour House. We had never eaten here before and it was REALLY good! :thumbsup2 DH got the lighthouse sandwich which he absolutely loved with a bottled water and an apple crisp! DD4 got the kids chicken nuggets with apple juice and a cookie which she shared with DS1. I got the fish basket with Diet Coke and chocolate cake which I planned to share with DD6 since all of our CS meals had been so big. This didn't quite work out, because she ate the whole thing! So, we got a 2nd fish basket for me with an apple crisp and a Sprite for DD6. I felt a little bad about this, because kid's credits are supposed to be used only on the kid's menu and we wound up getting 3 adult meals, but it wasn't our intention and it was the only time it happened. :rolleyes1

By the time we finished eating, the rest of the family was at the bus stop. We needed to find something to do for a little while as we waited on them. We decided that Country Bears would be fun for our kids but would probably be skipped by the rest of the family. We had about a 5 minute wait before entering the theater. The kids enjoyed the show. I like this one – I had the music from it on an album when I was a kid so it brings back memories :goodvibes – although I think some of the bears are starting to look a little tired.

After the Country Bears, the relatives were back in the park and eating what they described as bad food somewhere in Tomorrowland. We decided to go ahead and use our fastpasses for the Jungle Cruise. Our captain did the standard spiel which is so corny but sometimes you can't help but laugh anyway. OK, DH and I can't help but laugh – everyone else on the boat just stared at the poor guy.

We then met up with the family and went to the Monsters, Inc Laugh Floor. We had never done this before and it was really cute. I had no idea what to expect in here (I thought it might look like Turtle Talk), and so I enjoyed the comedy club theming. After this, we all split up again. DS1 and I went to meet some TGM friends in the Rose Garden. DS enjoyed playing with some other kids who gave him a glowstick (which he grabbed and yelled “hi-ya!” - must be a boy thing?). MIL and DD4 went to find a spot for the parade. DH, DD6, the nephews, DC and her kids went to use our Splash and BTMRR fastpasses. FIL had decided he was done for the day and did not return to the park this evening.

Up next, the Electrical Parade and Summer Nightastic Fireworks!

The cake is adorable! I LOVE it! I can't wait to read your update! I was going to read it, but then I decided I wanted to enjoy it so I'm going to wait until some very small people are asleep for the night...:rolleyes1
