9/20/09 Wonder

Ahoy there..I hope I am not joining the party too late.

Welcome Cara to the the Disboards & more importantly - the CRUISE!!!

As for my job dilemma... It's all GOOD!!!! My new manager didn't care at all and I get to go on our vacation AND have my dream job!!!!

Well done on getting your new job. :woohoo:

Hello everyone -

This will be my family's second Disney cruise. It will be me, my husband, our son who is 6. We are all very excited and can not wait to set sail! We will be staying at AKL the night before the cruise.

Tara

Welcome Tara & family. Not long to go now! :yay:

Pinky - I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. How's he doing? I know that can be so stressful, but it's good that you sound like you live nearby, so you can help your mom out.

Thank you all for the messages about my dad.

Thankfully he is out of hospital now & is resting at home, he's still in a lot of pain but I am sure that will stop over time. I am about a 25 minute drive from them so it's not too bad. :thumbsup2

All, I might need a little advance specially from those of you with young kids. We are in a dilemma and are not sure if we should cancel our trip. We had booked this trip back in June before we made any major decisions about m DS' school. He's currently in a school that is wonderful for young children. But he's getting to the age now (he just turned 3) where he needs more than just advanced daycare and babysitting. So, about 3 weeks ago, we enrolled him a new school that is French and Spanish immersion, which means no English is spoken at all. This is all great except the school starts at the end of August and we leave on vacation 3 weeks after he starts this school. We're worried about pulling him out for a week so close to the start of school. He's been talking about the cruise a lot. We got trip insurance which will cover 75% of the trip cost.

We REALLY want to do this trip but are really concerned about his adjustment for the first few weeks and then pulling him out for a week and then, readjustment back in. Anyone have any experience with this? Any advice is appreciated.

I really hope you guys are able to come. I don't have children so its difficult to say what I would do.

LC30,

I would not worry too much about going on the cruise a few weeks into a new school. As long as you are aware (which you are) that there may be some readjustment when you come home I am sure you and DS will readjust. Especially if he is excited about going on the cruise..I would not want him starting school to have any negative impact from his point of view...ie "now we can't go on our fun cruise because of starting my new school"..not the thought you want to put in his little head.

It is actually good that this issue is coming up now. Now that DS has started school you will be dealing with the question of when to vacation for a very long time. Might as well figure out what works and dosn't for your family now.

Cara

That's a really good point Cara. ::yes::

If he is really excited about the cruise then it may have a negative impact if you cancel due to him starting school.

Good luck with your decision Linda.

Welcome!!

Cara and OurOhana, thank you for your insight. This is definitely a hard decision. Those of you with children who have any ideas on this, I would love to hear as well. We have orientation in a couple of weeks and I'll definitely be speaking with the teachers about it to get their opinions as well. I would hate to miss this trip but I also don't want to have DS have a much harder time because of it. :headache:

Welcome aboard! Glad to have you join us! This should be a fun group.

My kids will start school on the 19th of August. Gabriella is on 3rd grade but Nathan is just starting Kindergarten. I'm not worried at all about him having to adapt again after being away for 10 days for this trip. I think that kids have an easier time then us with this changes, at least mine do. I just know that for us it won't be a problem at all.
I also agree with the others when they said that your son may have negative feelings towards the school if he feels that it was the reason that he couldn't go on the cruise.
But you know your child best and I'm sure you'll make the right decision!
Hope you can join us!!!

Welcome to the boards. The biggest thing I can think you've mised is the start of a fish extender group. It's not too late if you want to join. We'd love to have you.

Ok... so like I said we bought all the supplies to make our fish extender and I'm dying to start working on it!!!! I know that it needs to be no more than so many inches wide but I have no idea what that number is... does anybody know the dimensions it has to be?

Splashmommy and fahernand - I checked on the Sept 17th Wonder group and they received their gty rooms yesterday. So, hopefully we'll get ours tomorrow or Friday. We have a gty 12 and I'd love to get a porthole room!

Just wanted to let you know what our daughter's new teacher said about trips - she just volunteered this, no one asked during our open house. She said she understands that families take vacation, and she had no problem with them. She simply suggested that three or four long vacations in a year wouldn't be advisable (in our state, preK providers aren't paid by the state unless children show up at least 80 percent of the time for the classes. So I know that was part of her concern.) Anyway, I now feel better about our planned trip. She just kept reminding us that they're still just in preschool, and things would get bit more serious in a year or so. Not sure if that helps you at all. You may want to talk to your child's school, if you have concerns. They may put your mind at ease.

Thank you. I appreciate you sharing this. We have our orientation in a week and a half, we'll have a chance to speak with his teachers. I'll let you know how that goes.

What a gty???

A gty is a guaranteed room in the Category you pay for. They assign you a room and deck about 30 days out from your sail date. Sometimes, with a gty room you receive a complimentary upgrade from the category you paid for. For many of us, we book a Cat. 12, since it is the least expensive, but also it has the least number of rooms, so an upgrade is a possibility.

Anyone else biting at the bit to get the cruise doc's in the mailbox besides me? I know it is still a little early yet but I really want them ... badly ... seriously ...

Have a Gty-12 and no assignment yet. Only 37 more days to go not that I am counting.

I just booked a parasailing for my husband and I at Castaway Cay and also booked that all day package (snorkeling, tube, Bike ride and stingray encounter) to do with the kids.
In Nassau I booked the submarine ride.
I know I can cancel my reservation so does anybody have any input in what we should or shouldn't do?

I'm soooooo excited!!!!!
