one of my fave presents was from one of my best friends- a set of samsonite luggage - my dh and I use it all of the time - since your friend will be traveling - how about something similar for her?

How about a box of goodies to help her cope being so far from home? Phone cards, oreos, small picture album, things like that?

A few small photo frames so she can have pictures of family & friends around when she's so far from home, with a promise that you'll send her a new picture of you every month she's away, just so she doesn't forget you. The pics could coincide with our holidays and traditions, like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas - the types of things that will remind her of home.

A few phone cards to call you, some nice stationary for writing letters home, a web cam with software so the two of you can "see" each other on occasion? Lots of ideas for staying in touch while she's gone.

The saying goes something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, lucky penny in your shoe.

It might mean a lot to her to borrow something from you - maybe even something old. When my friend got married, (re-married to her ex-H) we gave her pennies from the years of their births, their kids births, the year of their first marriage, and this year.
