My best friend is getting a divorce and her ex is leaving her and their son and moving clear across the United States. She loves the 80's party theme and I would like to throw her a small 80's party to help her through this tough time. Any ideas on what I can do for an 80's party? Food, movies, decorations, etc?

As for costumes, just go to any local mall and search the juniors dept!! :rotfl:

I swear to you, the other day I saw M.C. Hammer pants for sale. I knew that was the final nail in the "'80's are back" coffin. ;) And no, they're not more attractive now.

As far as movies go here's a few.

16 Candles
Breakfast Club
Pretty in Pink
St. Elmo's Fire

movies- Valley Girl, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Top Gun, Ghostbusters
Decorations- BIG hair on all the girls and mullets on the guys :rotfl:

I was going to suggest the John Hughes Collection also! :rotfl2: What ever happened to him. What is it that made his movies brilliant and, above all, defined the 80s? Don't answer that, I don't want to hijack this thread. Just wanted to second your movie suggestions!

Oh the 80's..yea! You need to make sure you get some music..like the Go Go's, Culture Club, all the big hair bands, etc to play at the party.
Don't forget the bangels for your wrists, the leg warmers, the long sweaters with the huge belts and the leggings (actually I think those are back in style now :confused3 ), ripped jeans, Izod or Polo shirts with the collars up, the big sunglasses and as the OP mentioned..the BIG hair!
Big movies of the 80's were Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink, Better off Dead, Ghostbusters, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
See if you can find a rubics cube for a party game.
Oh this sounds like fun! :goodvibes

No way, hammer pants back in....that is crazy!!! Thanks for all your ideas. I thought of some 80's candy like pop rocks, candy cigarettes, etc but I can't think of any food items that really stands out 80's!!!

What about wine coolers? Weren't they an 80s thing? I haven't had one since the 80s I don't think, but I sure did have my share of them then! :p

Some trends: Members Only jackets, Ray Bans, aerobics suits, scrunchies or banana clips in the hair, bangle bracelets and big big earrings, anklet socks with pumps (multi colored pumps, usually that matched your skinny pants or leggings), overalls, Laura Ashley dresses, Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, leather pants, army pants, leopard print stuff -- the tackier the better. Uhhh lets see, what else. Lots of eye makeup on both girls and guys. Big big hair for girls and mullets for guys. Big hair bows.

What a fun idea! I think I might have to have an 80s party too. :)

If you're looking for 80s movie tips, pay a visit to The 80s Movies Rewind. It has reviews of hundreds of the 80s movies. I've done 42 reviews for them so far.

As for music, look for any of Thump Records' "Old School Funk" compilations. There are quite a few 80s songs on there (as well as from before and after the decade). The J. Geils Band's "Freeze-Frame" album and any of Samantha Fox's 80s work is good as well.

Great websites Heidi, thank you.

You guys are a great help, I am going out on Friday to buy everything and get everything planned. Thanks.

I don't know how you could work this in but Spuds Mckinzey would be a great dog to invite to your party. Also Someone needs to wear parachute pants with all those zippers. Also if VH1 still runs we love the 80's you can record (on beta or VHS) a few episodes to play all of those early Music videos during the party  Also If you co to a thrift store you can 45's or Lp's for Cheap and use those to decorate with
