From Fox News:

WASHINGTON — More than 8 million Americans seriously consider suicide each year, according to a new government study.

About 32,000 suicides occur in the United States each year, but a new study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicates that many more give the idea serious thought.

The new SAMHSA report is based on a survey of 46,190 people aged 18 and older. In the past, the question about suicide had only been asked of people who reported major depression but in 2008 it was added to all questionnaires.

Other findings:

— People 18 to 25 years old were far more likely to have seriously considered suicide in the previous year (6.7 percent) than those 26 to 49 (3.9 percent).

— Just 2.3 percent seriously considered suicide among those 50 or older.

— Among people with a substance abuse disorder, 11 percent had considered suicide, compared to 3 percent for people without such disorders.

I will not be the first vote in the poll....

Bumping up... I don't expect anybody to say they considered it, but anonymous votes are fine.

suicide is the leading cause of death in older children and teens.

far too often do those statistics focus on the 18-24 group, rather than the 12-17 group.

also, men are more likely than women and single people more likely than married people.

I voted never, but I'm sure the thought has crossed my mind a time or two. I have never seriously considered it though.

I've been through some very rough times when I felt like there was no hope to ever be happy in life, very depressed and desperate, but I never seriously considered suicide, although I thought it would take away the pain. Instead, I go to my priest when I'm feeling that way, and he ALWAYS makes me feel better. He always says "hang on, baby, you'll be alright, let it pass, talk your head off, get it all out, ask God to put people in your life to lift you up, nothing is worth suicide, even if you feel you're at the end of your rope there's always help and a solution to everything, be strong and come to me any time day or night if you need me."

Thank God for Fr. Charlie!!!!!!!

Just recently, a friend of mine from highschool wrote out a suicide note on his facebook account as I and other's of his friends were watching. His mom was on, too. Luckily, he didn't go through with it, as I think his public posting of it was more of a cry for help. It is strange knowing he has this serious depression when I think of him being the boy all the girls adored in school and probably the most popular boy in our grade.

I voted for "considered it within the past year", not as a current decision but one I will surely consider in the future if circumstances warrant it.

I find the topic especially interesting/debatable combined with the Newsweek article I read today: http://www.newsweek.com/id/215291.

NOTE: I am NOT NOT NOT condoning suicide as a solution for everyone (or anyone beyond a certain age, medical history, etc.). But I think it should be an option for those that choose it.

I welcome any discussion. :)

I've always said I'd leave everything and go live on some beach in a hammock where nobody knows me before I'd do that. Childish plan I know, but that's my plan and I''m sticking to it.

I've also said that if I ever did it I'd run off the side of a cliff at the ocean so I had a thrill on the way out, compared to sleeping pills or something.

I like plan A.
I'd be too chicken to actually do plan B.

You are lucky to have him.
There should be more like him.

PD, kind of a weird topic out of the blue. You just curious? You OK?

Totally. :) Thanks for asking!

I know you're really upset that the eagles signed Vick, but dude,, it's not that serious an issue, eventually Vick will be gone and you can cheer for the eagles again :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:cool1:

Yes, I have considered it in the last year, heck, even in the last month. My mother's illness, financial problems, and marriage issues have really gotten me down. I would not act on those feelings at this point in my life, and realize that I have been in a pretty bad place lately. I am working on making some changes, but it is hard not to be depressed when you feel like life is so lousy that there is no way out. If it weren't for my children, I don't know what I would do. I have to keep going on for them.

Yeah, that IS depressing, especially after last week's big win, that I couldn't feel any joy for after it was over. ;)

suicide is so horrible...I'm sure over the years I have had moments but have never seriously thought about it.

I will say, in our area, the attempts are at a high.

Have I considered it? Yes, but I wouldn't do that to my parents and now that I've found some family members and friends that I haven't talked to for years I have even more people that I wouldn't want to hurt.

My younger sister actually attempted to commit suicide about 30 days ago. My DH found her unconscience on the day that she was evicted from her house. She had taken over 30 pills and was well on her way -- her blood pressure was 70/30 when DH found her. She spend a week in the hospital and is in counseling now. She is a 47 year old mother & a grandmother.
