8/6/2012 - Mickey's Alaskan Adventure

Spent several hours yesterday researching for our cruise. We are all set to go, yeah! We are going in early and are staying at the Embassy Suites near the airport. They have suites, free made-to-order breakfast and free shuttle within 5 miles. Was also able to book a cheaper service to get us to the Pier by going through the Hotel. Savings of over $60 for our group of 7. We plan on taking the light rail into downtown. The kids will love this part of the adventure. We are super excited!

I also added my family and friends traveling with us for the FE.

Are we planning a meet and greet? Our last cruise we met at 3 p.m. in one of the lounges, like distinctions or something. It was fun to put the names with faces. We also became friends with several of the families and still stay in touch with several them. We also shared taxis, etc. for excursions to the beaches in the Caribbean. Was nice to meet others when we were traveling alone. Just a thought.

We also all had matching t-shirts made for departure day. We were able to spot each other in the terminal. Everyone wanted to know who we were, it was fun. We voted on a design from the graphics board then we all printed them off and ironed them on to t-shirts.

Our group of 7 is planning on doing t-shirts as we are cruising for my husband's 50th birthday. This was all he wanted. So we are going to come up with something funny to do.

I haven't research binoculars much. Our anniversary & DH's birthday are coming up in a couple of weeks (right after Father's Day, I know) so, a good pair of binoculars are on my list.:wizard:

I realize this isn't much help because I can't remember the name of the brand, but DH and I looked at some binoculars at REI a few weeks ago. They had a nice selection and a knowledgeable salesperson. We found a pair we liked and had planned to go back and buy them at an upcoming REI sale. But then we decided that the two pair of lightweight binoculars we had purchased before a 2001 trip to Africa would do just fine for Alaska, so we decided to skip the new purchase. We had been concerned that they might not be powerful or bright enough but decided that wasn't really the case. We also have a really old pair of binoculars that I got as a child for Cal football games. We might also bring those so the kids have a pair they can use as well. Turns out they are still in pretty good shape!

I would be up for a meet and greet if someone else will organize it. Same with a group t-shirt. Helping CaliforniaGirl09 with the FE is enough organizing for me for one cruise.

Awesome! The FE group should be fun. I suspect we'll get a few more families by the cut off date in July.

BTW, anyone just checking back and interested in joining go here: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=44862348&postcount=205

I'd definitely be up for a meet and greet. 3 pm in one of the lounges sounds great!

I'd also be on board for t-shirts if someone wants to take the reins. They did them for my cruise next week, and they turned out awesome. I think there are over 200 people who ordered them!

Keep me posted if you find some good deals. I'll probably check out Amazon or REI like Calfan suggested.

LOL! Totally.

The Quote was above.

I will handle the Meet & Greet details (we will plan on 3:00 and I'll research the names of the lounges). And the t-shirts. You said you guys ordered them? Any details? We all made our own. Decided on a graphic and made our own shirts (which are on sale this week at Michael's 2 for $5). Your family could use any color you want. The graphics will all be the same.

At the Meet & Greet we had a chance to update our room numbers. This was a biggy as some had changed.

Just realized I didn't do the quote thing right. I was trying to reply to CaliforniaGirl's comments.

It took me a while to figure out, too, buy you have to use both
parts around the part you are trying to quote, i.e. [quote..] xxx
and then you type below that. Hope that makes sense.

For the cruise I'm on next Saturday one guy did the graphic, ordered the shirts and did all the mailing and we paid him, which must have been an incredible amount of work. I think using the same graphic and ordering our own shirts sounds like a great idea. I didn't even know Michaels did that! Sounds like a great deal. There is cafe press, too. I think they have long sleeve shirts, which might be nice for Alaska, LOL.

Thanks for volunteering to handle the meet and the graphic!

Dis Meet & Greet-our Meet & Greet will be on embarkation day at 3 pm in the Promenade Lounge.

I'm still researching the Tshirts. Has anyone seen a graphic they are fond of? I've scoured the boards.....

Tried to send a pm but because I am new to this. Would not let me. Would like to add my family to the list.

That's what I remember, too.

Sounds like a great schedule! Hopefully Palo will open up or you can get something when you get on the ship. I can't believe how soon it's coming up, although I'm going on the Fantasy even sooner--I leave in 19 days! I can't believe I'm doing two cruises this summer but the last minute DVC deal they had for the Fantasy a few weeks ago was too good to pass up.

This is our third cruise and we are excited to go to Alaska. Is there a pirate party on this cruise. Also want to add our family to the FE list. I do not have enough posts yet to pm CaliforniaGirl09.

Welcome to the cruise! This will be our third cruise with DCL as well. Here is a link to the FE list. Please add your information and then post to let me know you are done so I can remove the link.

[Please PM CaliforniaGirl09 or Calfan for the link to the FE list]

My understanding is that there is a pirate party on this cruise but no fireworks due to strict Alaskan regulations. Also, many of the pirate parties have been held inside in the atrium due to either rainy or very cold weather. From reading posts on other threads, it sounds like the pirate party loses something in translation to Alaska.

We received our luggage tags and other cruise paperwork in the mail yesterday. Very exciting!

We just received our luggage tags, flight info & docs today. Kinda makes it even more real! Getting so excited. Now I am in packing mode & getting the FE gifts together. Can't wait!
:wizard:

Wow... looks like lots of teens/tweens on the FE gift list (including my own kids). I am gonna have to put on my creative thinking cap for this one. Hmmmmmmm. I love a good challenge. :wizard:

OK... I am a little confused - not hard to do - about the FE gifts. I did read the "rules/suggestions" and have a few questions. Am I responsible for getting gifts for just one other family during the cruise? Or do I give a different family a gift each day? What is the protocol/rotation?

Thanks!:wizard:
