Advertisements?? Where? I missed it.

On the link that Andrew provided, the second post was actually an adverstisement. It said DIS Sponsor Announcement or something like that. I haven't seen it on any other thread so far. Maybe just threads started today since it was about the Virtual House Party tonight?

Would you try to walk around the walled city on your own, Paula? I ALWAYS do excursions on my own -- went all over Europe with my three girls last summer with no outside excursions, took commuter trains in Naples, etc., etc., and Cartegena is spooking me for some reason. I just keep thinking we will get kidnapped or something, and this is so unlike me! That's really the only reason I am even looking for DCL excursions there, but it does make me feel like a wuss.

Sometimes it's smart to be extra cautious:confused3
Besides you're doing the zip line, that makes you brave in my book:goodvibes

Julie, everything I have read says that is very safe there. But there are also some listings on the cruise critic board about a couple of guides that could be hired. Everything I have read too seems that you are approached more traveling in a larger group with people trying to sell you things. So I don't think it would bother me to go off on our own. Honestly, I don't think DCL would really stop here if they didn't feel that it was safe for it's guests. Of course I hope there would be some others that would like to come along, I'm not talking about going by myself.:goodvibes

I would feel safer with a DIS group. If I can't get a DCL excursion I'm going to venture out anyway:confused3 Maybe we'll join you:goodvibes

From this in the Ny Times:

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpa...93BA35753C1A963958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=4

it sounds as if either would be fine -- Baru Island is more of a beach, reachable only by boat, with possible strolling vendors, etc., whereas the other one is at a hotel resort nearer the dock.

We had sort of decided that the Beach and Boating tour was for us - this tour does go to Baru Island. We didn't figure the kids would like the city tour - I think they would get bored very quickly.

I was looking at my checklist and still haven't started the renewal of my passport and DHs application for one. It's the picture thingy. I hate to have my picture taken.Guess we need to get that started as well.

Me too

I'm hoping to lose a few pounds before I get my picture taken:rolleyes:
I inherited the chipmunk cheeks from my Mom's side of the family;)

Best to go out of town.

HILTON BEACH

PICT0116.jpg

Very sad.

Lookin at your photo reminds me of the beach at the Hilton in Ponce, Peurto Rico. DH went there on a business trip - I got to tag along. We were really dissappointed - the water was filthy and the beach was not nice, it was dingy looking. It was still a nice getaway just dissappointed by the beach.

That poll is starting to annoy me. Did the Dis put it there or what and can we make it go away?

People trying to sell me things is fine -- you should have seen the vendors on the beach in Sardinia this past year! -- I just became fixated on the US travel advisory for the place and became uncharacteristically cautious. You are right that DCL would certainly be foolish to make a stop at a place likely to cause trouble and bad publicity.

Julie, you have never been a wuss ever, but please do a DCL excursion there,
the crowds at the port entrance was very intimidating.

Andrew! Thank you for saying I'm not a wuss!:lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc

It's true -- I'm not, but it's nice to hear from someone else . . .

Crash put it there , and I dont think he has been on yet ...Only Crash or a Mod can take it down ......

Zipline -- no problem! Kidnapped by Colombian drug lords (OK, this is where I am saying I have gotten obsessed!) -- not acceptable . . .:lmao:

It annoys me, too -- Crash must have put it there since it is on his first post, but I think he is sick today and hasn't read all our not-so-subtle references to getting rid of it. . .

I don't particularly liked being hounded by the vendors, but it happens in a lot of ports. I don't mind to say No once or even twice, but continually it gets very old. It especially gets on my nerves when it is done at the shops--if I want something I'll go in. But I tell you Julie, I felt the same way walking around China Town in NYC. Although, I did get some shopping done.:goodvibes

That was awful, wasn't it Paula? I've never had so many people try to sell me a handbag in life!

Yes believe me I want you all to have a good time, please do not go to this beach! I on the Med thread last year said do not do Capri, a few people came up to me after that day and said Andrew, you were right!
I feel strongly on this one, the beach in the city isn't nice.

I know you are a very independent lady and love to travel, on your own, and i did that a lot in the Med and have two lined up for this cruise, but in Columbia, its best to go with Disney, its safe in organized groups and in the approved shopping areas.

Its unlikley, but some Britions on vacation, were taken in past years, is generally safe in the approved tourist areas. I am glad to be going back, but will take care.

Crash has been unwell, but he has sent me a PM today so he is around.

This port and at the port entrance its bad, I only have seen worse in Egypt

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Chinatown!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I love shopping there, honestly. I got all kinds of little things for people's fish extenders there for my Med and repo cruises last summer.

I hope he gets the message

On our honeymoon in Antigua,we were on the beach and these kids ran up shouting to us "I'm #1,2 etc." They were securing their spot to try to sell us something. We actually did buy some really nice beaded coasters and a necklace for next to nothing. Which brings me to the next subject.

I just saw the CNN special with Pdarrahs DH.It will be on again I think tomorrow. It is the last 10 minutes of the show and sadly after all the time he spent with the filming crew, they didn't showcase him too much. But the organization KIVA was given good marks. The default rate on loans was stated as less than 1%.

Wonderful that he was on and Kiva got publicity . . . there was an article in tomorrow's NY Times Magazine (which subscribers get today) about Kiva and how it is so successful they have had to limit loans to $25 for now. There have even been times when there are more people willing to loan than people approved and vetted by them to receive loans. Quite a wonderful success story.
