Knock your block off eh? ... The litterail traslation of the THREAT my parents snapped in Chinese was "I'll Chop your head (off)".... and spoken in Chinese sounded close to this: "Ngoy Juummm... Neeee Goooy Howww" ... spoken with a certain Chinese meaness. And if in the prescence of a Chinese person from around he Hong Kong region ... but NOT Hong Kong itself (IE, country folk... not city slicker)... there's a fair chance that if you spoke this phrase above they'd turn and STARE really hard at you. Maybe even drop into a posture as if you'd attack them or they drop into a posture as if to RUN AWAY! In my case it would've been to RUN AWAY.... < wink > as a 4-5 year old is generally a munchkin with everyone else double the height and 4 times my mass! At least....

Now a days... I've already sent my kids into self defense Karate classes... and if I said anything like that to them (English as I've not taught them much Chinese... especially the punishment phrases) ... but whenever Igrump in regular english... in some cases... they swarm me and threaten me with Karate "KEEE-EiiiiiS!" .... sometimes aiming for the "nuts".... just like my girls were taught in self defense class. < sobering slow chuckling >

By the way.... there were other "Chinese" threats my parents and siblings used to spout... but this IS a family oriented thread... and I wouldn't want to lead a bunch of pirate parents into a series of what amounts into "How to CURSE and CUSS in Cantonese with a dialect like a Chinese Peasant (in ONE easy step)"...

Onthe other stuff.... I've cut off the TV from my daughters' room... then removed it (as that was the plan all along - she got it initially on account of her being really SICK and stuck in bed once and I left it there a spell out of lazyness... BIG MISTAKE there "Dad")..... and I've given time outs... and we have a system of earning "surprises" which can accumalte. These "surprises" are essentially $5 credits good for "things".... or "favors". Multiple "surprises" build into progressively bigger things. AND... for other "good acts", "good results" or "favors" we dish out defined cash amounts good ONLY for savings where the "money grows". So far ... neither child has thought to ask WHEN the money ever comes out of savings. < whew >

About the punishment stuff- yes, been there done that. The stuff you're describing works well with the younger ones.... oldest still has me for a loop although I think I'm on to something with this ipod thing..... hehe FINALLY something she really really REALLY (did I mention really?) doesn't want to lose (or rather at this point WANTS IT BACK!)

My Grandparents used to do the same thing but, in low German (peasant German ).

My father used to say the only German his parents ever taught him involved swearing....

grr...i'm so upset right now! i was really looking forward to this trip to get my mind off of things...and it's just not gonna happen!
we went over to the airport to see what was going on...and they told us...there are NO flights for us tomorrow at all! the earliest one he could find is one on tues...but we wont get into cali til almost 2 i think it was. i dont even remember now...cuz i'm so irritated! i'm supposed to be taking it easy...but now i feel like we are gonna be a bit rushed when we get there now! my bday is weds...and we had a non stress day planned....taking it easy...dinner....but now i think we're gonna have to do the parks...so we can use our tickets that we bought!
i don't know. it's just so frustrating! i guess it could be worse...at least we had the extra time before the cruise!

i haven't read thru all the back posts...but i wanted to send prayers to those that need them!

When my flight was canceled out of SFO a few months back, the airlines were incredibly unhelpful in the airport. So I got on the phone and started calling different airlines. Got a flight out that afternoon!

I was later told that airlines don't like to find you a flight with another airline because they have to pay huge fees to the other airline since they canceled the flight. But we were able to just pay the last-minute booking charge for the flight. I think my work went back and told United they owed us that money too. Not sure if we got it back, but it's something to think about. They don't want you flying another airline because they want your moola!

Good luck Shannon. Try not to stress about this. Maybe you weren't meant to fly today because something was going to go wrong on your flight. Better safe on the ground, than stressed out in the air. Hang in there!

Just quickly checking in over lunch break. I'm swamped at work, so no real time for DIS

What kind of backpack do you use?

It is a basic Canon Backpack - it was under $40 on Amazon which was much less than anything else I was looking at. The main purpose is for hauling ALL the stuff on the airplane - I have another much smaller bag for actually carrying on excursions and such. It only holds the XTi and either an extra lens or the flash. DH's P&S and DS9's P&S each have a small belt-loop case. Everything else will just be hand carried as needed.

I think I'm still overpacking too- I mean I haven't JUST packed like enough clothes for 7 days and then wash every 7 days- yanno? But who knows what they'll want to wear and I'm not wearing the same 7 things (not quite that much- but some will be worn more than once) every night to dinner either. I pared down my packing into less bags by taking things out and now I'm finding myself packing more in there! LOL

Yes I have bought an ethernet cable but it's only an 8ft because I didn't want to spend a fortune on a longer one just for this trip. Funny (or not) thing is that I bought one 8ft for almost $9 at walmart- then the very next day saw a bunch of them at the dollar store (same length) for a dollar! They were never there before- had a big display in the center aisle for them and everything. Story of my life. LOL Ofcourse I'd already opened the pkg and thrown away the packaging- so it's not like I could return the more expensive one from walmart. sigh
Will the 8ft be okay? I don't know how it's situated in the room. I hope the connection where I plug it in isn't like in a corner behind a bed or something- I may be in some weird positions trying to be on the laptop then. LOL
Good to know it's easy to hook up with it at HOJOs.

Usually the internet connections are right next to the desk. I have a 2 foot cord I use for traveling and that's always been fine.
