DS12 has 7th grade orientation tomorrow. Parents are to attend. It will be his 1st year in Middle School. They sent a schedule of the day. 8:30 am bagel breakfast, 9:00-9:20am Cheerleader Coach, 9:20-9:30am Principal, Superintendent, Board President and VP of the Elem.(don't know why her as she is in a completely different school), 9:30-10:20 Athletics, 10:20-10:40 schedule walk around, then a scavenger hunt and picture ids taken until 12:00N.

So the Cheerleader coach gets 20 mins.
Athletics gets 50 mins.
and the other 4 get a total of 10 mins.

Some parents need to take time off from work or to alter their schedule. I don't think that this is the time for a recruit talk. :confused3

Do you think that they'll be trying to recruit during the orientation or do you think they were chosen to just be the speakers? I'm assuming they are teachers at the school as well? Maybe they're the only ones that would come in - I know in our town it's nearly impossible to get teachers to go above and beyond what's in their contract. Of all the teachers, our phys. ed teachers are the ones most willing to help out. Hopefully that's the case with you. I know it would stink to make arrangements to come and get the sales pitch instead of actual information that I'm sure you're looking for. I have a new Middle Schooler this year, too. Good luck.

The cheerleaders coach is a math teacher - it specifically says "cheerleaders coach" and the head of athletics is the Middle/High School V. Principal and its headed as Athletics.:(

Didn't you know that sports are the number one prioity these days. They turned my middle school into a middle/high school this year and they (school board) talked more about the great new football practice field and made sure they had coaches for any concievable sport before they had the core subjects covered. One parent was concerned that they didn't have a Spanish teacher yet but we have a volleyball coach. I know the argument that sports brings in the money but with the No Child Left Behind we have got to get things in the proper order. I will now get off the soap box...Thank you

The private school that my children used to attend is ferociously calling parents that have left the school and offering them FULL scholarships if they will return and commit to playing football.

My daughter, who is in elementary, chose not to play basketball this year. The Assistant Principal said to her yesterday, "I can't believe you aren't playing basketball, what do you have to do with your time that's more important?" The tone of her voice just struck me odd, and I said, "She'll be doing her school work and becoming a better student." Just rubbed me wrong.

Welcome to the world of athletics.....aargh.

DD's school is the opposite--I'm glad in some ways, but it upsets me in others. They've cut gym down until it's just an elective--they only get 2 electives and one thing DD loves is choir so that leaves just one. I always push for foreign languages--she's had several years of French and Spanish already.

But I worry that these kids get NO exercise and hardly anyone walks--the parking lot after school is just PACKED with parents picking them up. DD plays basketball--at the parents meeting the coach made absolutely clear to parents and students that school and family come first.
