$700 vacuum?

I got the new Oreck catalog the other day, and the new vacuum comes with a 21 year warranty, PLUS yearly maintenance for 21 years.

Are you really paying $700 for the vacuum, or is the vacuum really worth $300 and you are paying for the yearly maintenance?

I like my Oreck, but do I really need a vacuum that costs $700? Maybe if I was Monica Gellar I would need it, but hey, my 3 yo Oreck works just fine for my level of clean.

Actually I love it! It is a little better than the other Orecks in some ways, but it also came with the absolute best portable canister vacuum for "free". You wear it on your shoulder and it has excellent suction. It also came with a car vac which I have yet to use because my husband uses the Shop Vac to vacuum the car.

So far I am very happy with it, I have had it a little over a year.

We paid 1800 for a Tristar and would like to chuck it over the highest bridge possible. What a waste of money.

We went out and bought a 9.00 small vacuum on clearance at Meijer and it works much better.

I just paid $729 for a Sebo K3 canister. (Due to back problems, I need to stick with a very lightweight canister that WORKS!!) Trying it to see if we like it.

We are the ones who returned a Dyson Animal because it felt cheaply made...and was ackward to change from upright to wand to tools. Besides, it was heavy & the upright hurt my back.

I swear DH & I should be consumer testers. We are PICKY about how things work.


ETA: We are moving and leaving behind our central vac that cost $1000. And I have a 35 yr old Filter Queen canister that really doesn't do great anymore. I see those go for abour $2000 new today.

I love my Kirby, it is 13yrs. old. Never had a bit of trouble with it and it is still going strong.

Well, I have a $600 Miehle and it didn't come with a warranty or yearly maintenance!!

And, no, I didn't buy it as a "status symbol". I bought it because I have ALL hardwood floors and, at the time of purchase, it was the only one that had rubberized castors, a rubber bumper, and horsehair brushes that would not scratch up my floor like the Hoover did.

It's also super quiet and doesn't send the dogs into a frenzy. It was also one of the few vacuums at the time that had a true "closed" HEPA system. Lots of vacuums have a HEPA filter, but the still blow everythign out the back. This one doesn't.

I've had 3 vacuums in the 30 yrs I've been married. 1st one an electrolux was about $300 at the time lasted 17 yrs. When that went I tried a $100 Kenmore never worked as well and the motor burnt out 1 week after the year warranty was up. Sears would do nothing for me I decided then to spend the money and get something that would last. My current electrolux was about $700 it's 12 yrs old and still going strong. For 29 yrs the $1000 spent on a good vacuum is about $35/yr compared to the $100 for the Kenmore that lasted only 1 yr. Certainly not a status symbol just makes more sense to me.

I didn't buy it as a status symbol. I bought it because it works extremely well, is very lightweight which is important because I have a broken disc in my back, and has a 21-year warranty. The last Kenmore I bought lasted about 18 months and weighed a ton. Plus little things went wrong with it right away like the headlight and the rubber strip that goes around the front of it fell off.

I have tried many brands of vacuums over the years and haven't been happy with any of them. We thought we would give this one a try and I love it so far. So for me, it was worth the money.

We have that Oreck as well. Not as a status symbol, but dh and I are both in our early 50s and have bad backs and I have many other health issues as well. We have pergo and carpet and it works great on either surface. Oh, yes, we also have a furball (Siberian) and it takes care of all of that in a flash.

I posted earlier. Mine was not a status purchase either. After returning the Dyson, we made a better list of what we needed in a vacuum, and searched from $200 & up -- all kinds of brands. Its just that we happened to find it in the $700 range.

We have the same Sebo K3 vacuum at work....and I've used it there, so that helped in the decision. Quality was important to DH. I had to be lightweight for me (canister is 14 lbs). Powerful for both of us. And since the new home will be white woodwork, we wanted one with a rubber bumper around it. It also has soft wheels for the hardwood floors. And it's very quiet. Handle is very comfortable; and it extends. Good warranty. Low repair history.

If I could have found ALL that in a $200 vacuum, I certainly would have bought it. We certainly could use the extra $ on some other purchase involved with moving.

We shop for value....and we are happy with our choice.

Any suggestions on a vacuum that is Below $400, but can clean up all the dog hair at my house without destroying the vaccum. My vacuum broke and I am looking for one that really works, because I have had enough with my vaccum not picking up the dog hair and me doing it by hand!!

I bought a Hoover Windtunel (with bag, not bagless) upright about 5 years ago and it still works fine, paid $250. Sucks up Missy's dog hair with little trouble (and she shed's so much I could knit another dog! ). It's heavy though. I wish I'd paid the extra $30 to get the self propelled model.

I have a 3 yr old oreck paid about $300 for it ...I love it -Its light and studry
would I pay $700.00 for a little more plus the warrenty for 21 yrs...YES I would.
I have a parrot and seeds are a mess- this does wonderful with it..I got no
warrenty or cleaning with mine and that cost about 50-70/year to have
done -so I think you are getting a savings...
I also have the small over the shoulder vac with mine that does great too!

Just looked at that vacuum this afternoon - what a coincidence! Stopped by the vacuum cleaner store to get bags and in talking with the owner he started RAVING about this thing. He is not an Oreck fan, and in fact only carries this one and 2 others. It's 8 lbs. which is amazing in itself and has an amazing brush bar.... even tho it's not self-propelled when you turn it on it goes by itself. The suction in the cannister with attachments also seems pretty good. We have 2 big dogs who are going thru their fall shedding routine now, and even tho I have a good Bernina I'm really tempted to get this. There's a $100 trade in for these now, but the owner told me he'd give me the $100 off even if I didn't bring an old vacuum in so it's down to $599. Not exactly what I had in mind for a Christmas gift but hey....

I just purchased a Dyson Animal per some recommendations here and the reviews elsewhere. I hestitated spending that kind of $$ on a vacuum, but so far I love it. (Wait did I just say I love my vacuum? ) Anyhow, I bought it at Kohls, they were on sale plus I had a coupon for saving an extra 15% (with my card) so it brought it under $400. When I was looking at them the clerk said she had one at home and loved it. Cleaned up her dog's hair great. Then when I went to check out the cashier asked if I'd used one before, after replying no he said they were great. Made me feel much better about my expensive purchase.

And man does it 'suck'. Couldn't believe what it picked up after vacuuming my hallway!
