7 Month reservation change question

Question I didn't see readily answered when I searched... First booking on a new DVC contract!

I have my home resort booked for 7 nights. Ultimately we want to do the last 3 as a split stay somewhere else at the 7 month window.

Should I have made 2 separate reservations (4+3) if this was my intention? It feels like otherwise I will need to modify/cancel the last 3 nights before I book at the chaotic 7 month window. This will make 2 transactions.

Better would be to be able to modify existing reservation to new 7 month resort at the same time?

Main reason is by default if nothing was available at 7 months I don't want to lose my main reservation. Always merge at the end if needed I am guessing, but haven't seen many reservations "split" strategically.

What am I missing being new to all this?

Yes, you should book your home resort as 4+3. If you can’t book the non-home resort at 7 months, just chat/email/call MS to merge the two home resort reservations into one.

By booking one reservation, unless you have enough points to book the non-home and then modify the home resort, you risk losing the non-home while modifying the home resort to free up the points for the non-home.

Sorry!

You are right, you should make 2 separate reservations at your home resort so that the last 3 nights can be modified separately at the 7 month mark, otherwise you risk losing if you have to cancel and rebook.

It is best to put different names on the reservations so that MS does not automatically merge them.

If the 3 nights are available now at your home resort, you might try to modify and rebook while still in home resort period.

MS did merge mine once!

Thanks everyone so much, was able to just modify and did 4+3.

Should I eave a child off on 1 of them to avoid the merger as some have mentioned?
