7" Android Tablet - anyone?

I bought one of those $150 "tablet" e-reader devices back around Christmastime. Like a PP said, you get what you pay for. Now I'm a techie, I work in IT, and my expectations might be higher than some, but a $100 tablet is not going to perform like a Nook Color let alone an iPad 1 or 2 or a Galaxy Tab or Moto Xoom. I promptly took the cheapie tablet back and bought an iPad and couldn't be happier. If you're primarilly interested in an e-reader with some basic web-browsing functions, the Color Nook is a great choice. With the recent OS upgrade, it's become much more usable. B&N has recently launched their app store, so you can now buy apps for the Nook without having to root it. My personal opinion, there is so much crap out there in the Android Marketplace that isn't even worth installing that I wouldn't bother rooting a Nook just to get access to it. The decent stuff that's been vetted is going to be available on B&N's Nook app store.

That's not entirely true, it's why so many have rooted their nook. BN app store lacks sorely, they only gave about 7 free apps which are useless and many of the paid apps are extremely expensive. The best part of the upgrade was the access to flash and that was about it. The best thing to do to a NC is rooting it. It's capabilities are amazing. We have an iPad and a NC and I like the rooted NC so much more.

Although I am not a "full" techie, I am very comfortable with technology. My husband is a full techie.

Now you have given me something else to think about and I am now considering either the Samsung Galaxy Tab which is $199 with a 2-year contract with Verizon or a NC which I root. What would you suggest?

I don't want an iPad as I want to be able to run flash, download audio books from the library (which cannot be done on my iPod or iPad).

I know with the Galaxy I would have 3G connection and with the NC there would only be wifi. Any down side to only having wifi?

Thanks!

For me there isn't a downside to only having wifi. I only use it at home. I have my iphone when I'm out if I need something. I see no need to pay an extra charge to use it.

My DD8 uses her nook for everything. The software version is 1.0.1, I'm sure it could use an upgrade. The only think it lacks to be perfect in her eyes is Netflix.

I have the 3G because I use it outside of my home. But, I will see in 2 years if I still want to keep it. But I think I will. It is so convenient to be on the bus or wherever and check email or go on Facebook, etc.

Why can't you download library books on your iPad? I do. You use OverDrive Media Console. If your library is one that supports the Nook then they should be on OverDrive. I use my iPhone or iPad to create a hotspot to allow my daughter to use her Nook when we aren't home.

My library doesn't support overdrive. We have to use another program which I can't think of it's name right now.
