Hi! DD, 8, has been involved in matrial arts for about 7 months. We began by signing up for a 6-week session - it was a good decision IMO because several kids quit. We happen to take lessons at a low-key facility. Just the basics with some fun thrown in. Should DD still like it after Christmas, we'll probably move her to a more structured gym. Unfortunately, that would mean attending classes anywhere from 2-4 times a week which will be difficult as the girls do other things too.

I would give it a try for one session before signing up for a year! Good luck!

Edited to add that we pay about $48 a month which is high as we only go once a week.

My 11yr.DD loves taekwondo ( she does taekwondo America) we were paying $69 a month but they ran a special for lifetime so we did it ... She can attend 6 days a week if she wants , they request atleast 3 days.. She has been going for 3 years and still goes atleast 4-5 days a week.. I recommend it .. Good Luck try different programs..

My son (soon to-be 5) just started taking tae kwon do. He loves it. It is a beginner program & once he is 6 yrs old he can join the regular tae kwon do program.

We pay $40 a month (2x a week)

We also were able to try it out for 2 weeks for free before signing up.

My DS6 also does Tae Kwon Do 2x a week and we pay $100/month. I'm gonna assume we'll be paying this for quite sometime since he's planning on becoming a black belt! The school he attends has a pretty good deal, if two people join in the family, then the rest can join for free. My DD9 would like to join, which would mean that DH and I could go for free....

When I was paying for DS's Tae Kwon-Do, it was about $70/month for up to 4x/week. The dojang also offered a card to use for classes for those who only came once/week. It was prepaid for 10 lessons @ $10 each.

Initially, he started at the local YMCA which worked better for us financially. That was only once/week & you paid for 8 weeks at a time.

Now the 2 schools are associated, but the Y's program is cheaper for those who can't go a couple times per week.

I always suggest that you visit any school you are thinking of using to see how they run classes. There is one is our area that always reminded me of the Karate Kid movies - obviously we didn't use that one.

My daughter has been goign to taekwondo since her 4th birthday, almost a year now and she goes 3 times a week and its 65.00...starting in Sept she will be starting 4 times a week (she moves up to her 4th belt then) 3 days of lessons and one day is weapons and sparring. I think the price goes up to 80 a month then. I like the place we go because you don't have to lock into any contract...its a month by month thing.

My DS (17) takes Kung Fu....he loves it!
It's $150/month for advanced classes 4 hours a week.
There are other charges for testing and equiptment/uniforms etc. that come up along the way.
Usually they give a free month at the beginning to see if they are going to like it.

My DS11 is a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, almost a 3rd degree. He has been going to the same school since he was 4, but he took a year off when he was 5. We pay about $1,000 a year for his lessons, but the school he attends lets him take classes at anytime on anyday, plus he is on the Demonstration Team.

Make sure you look for a good school and you like the philosophy of the owner. Our owner is a 9th degree Black belt fom Korea. His school has been in our area for many many years. He has former students whose grandkids are now attending the school.
Ask for recommendations from other parents and go and look at the schools when class is in sessions. Most schools will offer lessons for a month or several weeks at a reduced rate. That way your DS can try it out and see if he likes it. Check out the schedule of classes. Some schools only teach a certain belt level on a certain day, so as your child moves up in rank, you have to switch times and days. If you are interested in TKD look to see if they are affliated with the United States Tae Kwon Do Union (USTU)and the Master instructor is certified by Kukkiwon. Our Black Belts get a certificate from Kukkiwon in Korea stating that they are certified Black Belts.

My son loves TKD and it has helped him so much. I know that he can defend himself he he needs to, he has gained self-confidence and he has been taught to try to resolve your conflicts with words before fighting. The friends he has made at this school have been wonderful. He has known most of them since he was 4, they have all moved up in rank together. They have a lot of fun going to competions together and even competing against each other. They are all so supportive.

here are a few links that can give you some more information. The first is to my son's school. The second is the USTU and the third is a little information about Kukkiwon from some guys website.

Both of my DD's (9 yr) are taking American Karate. They have been in it for a little over 1 year. They love it. They go for 2 days a week. DH wasn't that crazy about them taking it. He thought that he has taught them good enough to defend themselves. I told him that they can defend themselves against another child not an adult. I pray that nothing would ever happen to them but you never know. Maybe they can/can't get away but I don't want to see them on the news walking away to their death. I want to be able to see them fight if nessary. I know that I am abit morbid. Sorry.

Their teacher is a 4th degree black belt in American Karate, Hap keido (sp), Judo, and Tae Kwon Do. He also has various belts in three other disiplines (sp). He has taught them simple break aways and such. At first I didn't think they were learning anything and I was rethinking my decision. One night while the kids were outside playing tag with some of the other kids on the street (boys), a boy had one of my DD by the wrist saying "She's it! Igot her!" My DD did one of these break away moves and ran away laughing. The boy just stood there staring at his empty hand. ILMAO.

They are excited about going and learning all the moves. Sign your DD up. She will have a blast.

Wow! So expensive in some cases and so time consuming. I think we're just looking for a once a week thing. I'll call around. The one place I know about is $65/mo for unlimited time but even that is a steep price for us.
