My DS is 3 and he has asthma. He's had it since he was 7 months old, so I can relate. I travel with his nebulizer and he takes Singular and Zyrtec daily as preventive medicine. As soon as I even get the hint of a cought or a wheeze on vacation, the neb gets turned on and he gets his pulmicort and albuturol. That always helps him get over a rough patch and it works on vacation. I have DS's asthma under control, but can understand the panic of a full-scale attack. DS had one at 9 months old and it was the only one, but scared the **** out of me. One thing I have learned from my Dr is that you can't keep them living in a bubble, because in the end, it can make the asthma worse. Asthma is on the rise because of how clean our lives are now. Keeping them in the same enviornment, even though more comfort for us parents, can harm them in the end. This way, the older they get, and if their asthma doesn't improve, when placed in different situations, they might have a worse reaction then if they had been to different places before. Only you as the parent can make the call, and I've been there, so I know. I don't take DS to places without good medical care close by, but Orlando is a great place to go, since there are such good pediatric facilities there. DS basically used to wheeze through the winter, but once he was old enough to start the Singular last year, he had his best winter yet. He had a flu shot, and only got one minor cold the entire year. Do you get your kids flu shots? I've found to be really helpful in keeping DS from getting sick, and thus keeping an asthma attack at bay. If your children's asthma is that horrible, I'd consider taking them to an Allergy/Asthma specialist or a puliminary specialist, if you haven't already. I have an allergist for me, and she has given me good advice about DS's asthma, and if needed I'd take him if his asthma was out of control. I love my pediatrician, but with something like Asthma, I'd want the experts to weigh in if the regular medicines weren't working. Good luck with your decision!
