would being picked up by a town car at 4 am be ample time? My dad is going to fly home a few days earlier than the rest of us, and this is the flight that works for him (poor thing). Or could we do a little later, say 4:30?

I don't want him sitting at the airport forever, but I don't want him rushed either. I'm thinking of keeping his checked bag so he doesn't have to check in at the airport, just go thru security. We will be on Southwest so I will have ample luggage allowance.

It depends if it's a domestic or international flight and how much you trust security to not stop choose him/you for an additional screening.
I would say that early the roads should be empty should be fine at 4am, 4:30am might be pushing it a bit to tight.

I agree with HatboxGhoul. If he leaves by 4:00, he'll be at the terminal by 4:30-4:40. That gives him plenty of time to get through security, which may or may not be busy at that hour (you never know)... Smart of you to save him time/trouble of checking a bag. That could otherwise add a lot of time.

4AM means you get to the airport around 4:30-4:40 as previously mentioned. If he has no checked bags, that should be plenty of time. Even if it takes an hour to get through security, that's 5:30 leaving an hour to get to the gate.
However, leaving at 4:30AM means getting to the airport at 5-5:15AM. If security is slow, you get through that 5:30-5:45. Add some time to get to the gate and they're already boarding.

I would stick to 4AM.

Also if he is also flying SWA they begin boarding half hr before meaning they start calling at 5:50am.

Better safe than sorry, and he can always catch a nap on the plane.

If I had a flight that early, I'd stay at the airport Hyatt the night before.

I was considering that for our 6:30 AM flight in October, except they want over $350 for 1 night. Unfortunately the only non-stop flight from Orlando to Louisville is on SW at that time of day. :( Looked at Tampa and that one is at 7:10, so no better.

I just want to point out that last week, I drove back and forth from the BoardWalk to the airport three times. The trip never, not once, took more than 30 minutes and usually took closer to 20. On one of the trips, my GPS predicted an 18-minute trip.
