I have to give you a little background about this phone call...
I've become good friends over the past few months with Barbie Bertschy - Major Bertschy's wife. She called me and told me that her husband now has a cell phone and that he called her and she told him to try and let Bobby Knight call his mom. Major Bertschy told his wife that all of the guys are doing great and that they are anxious to get home. He said that they are all on a type of point system and that Bobby has the highest number of points and that he has matured greatly throughout this deployment. (Nice compliment for a mom to hear!) Anyway Major Bertschy told his wife that they are hoping to be on their way to California by next weekend and "hopefully" back here around June 7th...but we all know how that can change.
So...at 6:00 a.m. this morning, we got a phone call, and he sounded wonderful!!! He said that he was just leaving his tent, and that Major Bertschy called him into his tent. Bobby said he thought, "oh no, what did I do?" Once inside the tent, the Major handed Bobby his cell phone and told him "call your mom".
He said it's terribly hot - near 120 degrees, and almost impossible to sleep at night. He sounded really good, just very anxious to come home. Said he's still receiving some packages in the past week....and that Dustin Baller says "tell your mom I said thanks". Bobby said that Dustin averages 5 boxes at each mail call, and I know a lot of you adopted Dustin. So...your packages have arrived!!!
Bobby also told me that he has enough deodorant and toothpaste to last him a year after he gets home.
I told him that the City of South Bend is planning quite a "welcome home" for them and that thanks to Fred Dodd, they have become the local heroes. He said that they can't wait to get back!
He said that once he gets to California, he can call more regularly and let us know more of what's going on.
Oh....and we told him that we had a surprise for him when he gets home (little sister Colleen's engagement), but he said "don't tell me - I want to be surprised."
So that's it...hopefully only a few more weeks and we'll have him back home in Indiana.
