Hey guys, I posted on the WISH forum, but I figured since I am a teen I'd ask you all as well.

Do any of you run? I'm wanting to train for a 5k probably for next summer and I'd really like advice on it from someone my age who has participated. :goodvibes

Just run...thats all you need. Ive been running 5 k's since I was in 4th grade. I dont really train but I play many sports to keep in shape. If you can stay active with playing anything from sports to just running until then you will be fine with a 5 k with a 10 k I would say stay run everyday and play sports as much as possible.

I'm a cross country runner, but i do some road races as well. My advice is try and do a mixture of runs 5-6 days a week. (tempo's, long runs, hills). Strech ( i think i spelled that right?) a little bit before you run, but mostly after the run. Also! Try and use alternate between two different shoes, to prevent injury!

Thanks, guys. I'm a little afraid because right now I run about 1.5 miles a day in 30 minutes on a treadmill. Since I just started a few months ago, I can only run about 3 minutes at 5-6mph and I walk around 4mph. I do around 60 minutes of exercise at least a day, I suck at sports, so I guess exercising would make up for that.

I have a pair of running shoes I got for christmas, but I'm not sure if they're right for me, they're okay.

You should really run outside...the running is different and sometimes the miles and stuff doesnt work on a treadmill

Treadmills are notorious for taking a toll on your knees too. High impact compared to running out on the normal ground.

this must depend on who you are because my AT recommeded treadmill running to me because of my knees.

running on a track is the best for you. I try and get to my school at least a couple times a week if possible to hit the track. Most days, though, I just use my treadmill. I'm going to be knocked a couple days off my exercise schedule this week, though. Stupid wisdom teeth.

Yeah, I'm planning on switching to pavement when it gets cooler or running earlier in the morning the only thing the treadmill is really hurting right now is my stride length. I feel like I'm taking baby steps. :goodvibes

I used to run almost every day, but I've been so busy this summer (and it's been so darn hot!!) that I haven't had much of a chance to run. I hate running on the treadmill - it's too boring and monotonous for me. Also, it seems like it takes me longer to run on a treadmill. I can run about 1.4 miles on pavement in the time it takes me to run a mile on the treadmill.

my dad did a rollerblade full marathon (26.2 miles) and i went with him when we would practice sometimes.

pretty much, just come up with a routine and stick to it.

good luck!

.

Agreed. I've had to learn how to walk, jog, and run again after my knee surgery. In fact, last year at this time I couldn't walk, and I learnt how to walk in 2 weeks. (PS - It is MUCH harder than you think. It's not so much skill as mush as trust/confidence)
I still can't run and my jog is a bit odd so I mix in the elliptical and bike with a treadmill. The treadmill definitely helps, but it really depends on the person.

It's fact that treadmills have a higher impact on knees than regular ground. You may not feel it, which could be what varies person to person. It's why the company who made Bowflex just released a new type of treadmill that has less impact when you run.

There's a teen heath site called SparkTeens that has workout and nutrition plans and the like. They've got a plan for training to run a 5K. After a few missteps, I'm back on track with this. I follow the running plan. I'm on week 2 day 1. It's really nice to have a set out plan. The link to it is below.

As for the whole outside running vs treadmill running...
I find running on a treadmill significantly easier than running outside. However, since 5Ks are outside I'm going to move to outside on my off day to get used to it before moving my training outside.

Good luck!!

I've also herd that treadmills do more dmg on your knees and that you should run outside as much as possible
