are ANY other kids experiencing this too?

local school in my state shut down for nearly 2 weeks because kids were getting so sick...they had to completely clean the school from top to bottom.

maybe - since this has just started, call the school and find out if maintenance is using any 'new' products.

might as well start narrowing it down

My college aged son is very allergic to the older house of one of his friend's-I believe the house has mold. Every time he spends a few hours there, he comes home looking like he has a severe cold. Hope you find out what the problem is.

You might have to dig around. Look for new cleaning products...were the floors or desks cleaned, was anything painted, were pesticides sprayed (classroom windows are open this time of year), etc.

I had a class in college that made me ill. I'm sensitive to certain overhead lights (esp when I was pregnant) and this class was horrible. It was all I could do to get through the semster and I only had to be in that room for 50 minutes, 3 times a week.

I've been allergic to school since first grade or so. I always feel really drowsy and sometimes fall asleep.

Is there a problem with mold? Have any pesticides been used recently? I hope you find the cause.

We went through this at the beginning of the school year with Destiny. Hives, itching, etc. The school told me they hadn't been using anything new chemical-wise. She ended up on a three week off and on course of steroids, benadryl, and singulair. We never did find out the cause. After those first three weeks, though, she has not had anymore hives.

Is the school air conditioned? If so...this would be one thing that from a school envionment may be "different" from a few weeks earlier in the year, when the A/C may not have been turned on yet.

i have heard (my neighbor's son has asthma and she has done tons or research on the internet) and the heating - cooling systems of school are supposedly very dirty.

Also, another idea would be did any classroom get a pet? Some rooms have a variety of pets, ie hamsters etc. One of these may be contributing too.

Was there a substitute teacher who chose to "marinate" in their perfume before they came to work? That would do me in - without a doubt.

dd's school was closed last year due to a mildew problem, that can build upo in te duct work an really be bad after the ac is turned on in spring, sometimes other alergins might be in those dicts,, from rodent s to bug spray, mold and mildew , even just plain old sat all winter dust

It could just be plain allergies and hayfever. It's gettiog to be that season and if there are a lot of high pollen trees in the area, that may be a factor.

I thought the same thing with my DD last year. Funny thing is that she said the teacher had put an air freshener in the room because something smelled bad. I was thinking mold, or something in the walls.... I still don't know. We did have her allergy tested and she was allergic to just about everything, so she has taken several allergy medications.....trying to find the best one for her. I would ask a lot of questions at the school. I was told the maintenence man did not find anything in the ceiling, but would they actually tell me if they did? I highly doubt it. I would also talk to your doctor. Also, I have heard that allergies were worse this year in most states. I know my DD and I are having a rough time this year. Good luck.

I had a student once that had a severe reaction to eating a hotdog. It was the red dye. He had eaten them all year without them bothering him. After lunch I noticed his face swelling.

I also taught in a brand new school. After about the 2nd or 3rd year I started having allergy problems. Several parents complained about their children only being sick during the week and not on weekends.

The NC Environmental Protection Agency did an air quality test and we had mold in the duct work. My classroom tested with the highest level in the school. One student that was absent for 30 days that year sat under the air vent. Her parents put her in private school the next year.

So even new schools can have mold problems.

I actually went through this exact same thing (too many years ago ) Turned out I was allergic to two things: we'd recently changed desks around, and I was now sitting next to a girl that had a cat at home...and I was so allergic to the cat hair that it was causing a reaction just from the hair on her clothes (no way to avoid it really). Also, in the move, I'd been placed up front...and the chalk dust was causing my allergies to act up even worse. Just by moving desks (away from the girl with the cat and away from the chalk board), it took care of the problem.

It really could be any number of things...Good luck in finding the cause !

Lots of good advice already but as an extreme allegery sufferer ( is that even a word?) I do know that even if your child has never had allergies before the can and often suddenly pop up as a child ages. It is not uncommon for someone to never have a problem and the suddenly develop a allergy or for a allergy to disapait. I would call the doctor and give them a description of the symptoms often times doctor can pin point right away if it is an allergic reaction of something else. I hope this helps I know from experience that allergies are no fun, especially as a child. I am so allergic to cats and cigarette smoke that I will be sick for a week after being exposed to them for any exteneded period of time.

Our school was just built 2 years ago and before they got all of the roof on it had rained. The water stayed in the block walls and on went the roof. And there's one place you can stand in the main hall and the 4th grade hall and actually hear water moving when it's raining hard. A friend teaches in that hallway and had the janitor poke around but he insisted there was nothing wrong yet she had to go on allergy medication in order to teach in her room. Schools don't want to put the money out to have inspections for mold.
