Just how "corny" is this place. It sounds like fun, but I am not sure my DH will appreciate the concept. Do they really get into it, like the "you need to eat one more bite" thing? Not sure DH will see the humor in it. Wondering if I should cancel my ADR & go for something else, like maybe the Cali Grill or someplace that he can try lamb (he wants to).

What do you all think?

If you're not in a playful mood and just want to be "left alone" they will do so. The 1950's PT is much more a "homey" food than the Cali Grille, and that's an understatement. Rather a pot roast versus filet...

It also depends on the waiter/waitress you get. One time we were really in the mood to interact with them and we got a dud! I had to say to him "please tell my daughter to eat all her vegetables or no dessert!" Another time, the waitress was wonderful...she had the whole room cracking up and interacting with each other. We had a really good time, even DH who is a little on the shy side.

You can tell them when you enter that you'd like to sit where your "cousin" is a little more subdued. We asked for that once with my in-laws along because they weren't in the mood for the interaction but wanted the pot roast! No problem - they sat us where the waitress was acting like any other restaurant waitress.

Last time we went though we wanted the interaction - and we ended up with a dud! We enjoyed listening in on the table next to us and their waitress. We were even asked by her if we were related and if we wanted to pull the tables together! That made us all laugh - I hadn't realized how obvious my eavesdropping had been!

We loved it! Auntie Claire was a terrific server and had nine of us (two families, including two dads:) in stitches ). We're going back in March! The food was fine-to-good.

This is my favorite place to eat. I remember not eating my green beans and they taking them and put whip cream on them and feeding me them. LOL

My daughter's boyfriend "hid" his green beans and we ratted him out....Aunt Jan brought him a Green Bean Sunday too!!! And proceeded to spoon feed him 1 green bean!!!! We loved it!!!! Then the whole section pointed a finger at him and yelled "It's not nice to lie to Aunt Jan!" Made our Thanksgiving dinner a hoot!!!!

We really wanted to go to 50's because we though it would be so much fun...but it's closed during our trip. :-(

I like it there a lot, but if you think he may be put off by it, then I'd say go with your gut and book something else.

we are another family that looooves auntie claire....we request her every time we go...this place is great..and the peanutbutter milkshakes are awesome....

DD picked this place in 2002 and we really didn't want to go. Boy are we glad that we did. We have been back every year since. The food is outstanding (love the fried chicken) and the service is really good too. There are times that you get a "dud" of a cousins. But the you get the ones that are hilarious. When DH and I went we got one that was quite, but then in 2005 we had a great one, Thanks Aunt Janice. They made DD best friend stand with nose to the wall and DD had to clear the dishes, sit with another family and then get up and "apologize" to everyone in the room for ruining their diner. We love it there. Hope you keep the reservation!!

Okay, now you guys are making ME nervous! I don't eat veggies. Yuck! Can I order my meal without them? I do NOT want to be "made" to eat my veggies.

2giddy4wdw--what did those poor girls do to deserve such harassment, lol?

I've been 3 times and 3 times no fun, no antics, nothing. So if you don't want to many antics I should join you. I think fun servers are scared of me :teeth:

Your Dh could just stare at the movie screen....when we were there, the waitresses were subdued if you wanted them to be....my dh7 and ds5 did not finish their meals and the waitress gave them each wet cloths and made them wash 5 cars before they could have their dessert....they were really shy at first - but the waitress insisted....they wanted the dessert really bad so they did it!!!! It was funny watching them walk up to peoples cars and start scrubbing them while the people were eating their dinners...they even got a tip!!!!

We do have an ADR for Sci fi, so we are covered there. I don't want to wash cars/tables either!

We've eaten there 4 times. We've only had a few "antics". Our 1st time when we order our drinks, my mom ordered 3rd and said "make it 3" regarding our diet coke order, and sure enough, the waiter (Bud or Bob?) brought her 3 sodas. That was about it. 2nd visit nothing special, 3rd visit same. 4th visit (Jan. 05), our waitress, Aunt Elaine, was great! My DD5 wanted to tell her a joke. She led her over to another table, introduced her to our "cousins" from Ohio, and sat down while she told her a knock knock joke. :rotfl2: It was precious.

So, I wouldn't be afraid of too much antics, I think it's more of a give and take thing. Besides, the food is good, the decor is right out of the 50's and it's a nice break out of your day. One more thing, the last time was the only time we'd made ADR and it was the only time we sat at a table with a t.v.-coincidence? I wonder.

13 days and counting-spur of moment-just booked today!

I definately agree that it's a give and take. I think the waiters/waitress go by there impressions of the people. Our first trip DS friend was being a wise guy and he had to get up and sing "I'm a little tea pot". So I really think it goes by the feeling they get at first impression. Still I think the food speaks for itself. The Smores dessert is out of this world too.

We were also disappointed about it being closed!

It's our favorite place and we go at least once every trip (well, when it's open...).

One favorite memory happened when I went last December with my then 5yo, my sister, and our 82yo mother. My mother went to the bathroom as we were seated and when she came back to the table the waiter asked her if she'd washed her hands. The look on her face was priceless! :rotfl: She quickly caught on and had a wonderful time--she really got into it!

But we're that kind of people and that's our idea of fun. One trip I "got in trouble" and had to sing with one of my "cousins" (another customer). The "cousin" and her family were funny because they didn't know what kind of a restaurant it was until they sat down. We knew from when we sat down that the waiter was going to quiz us about where our "cousins" were from, so when they got seated we quickly asked where they were from and chatted with them. They thought we were, uh, overly friendly until they started to understand about the restaurant. We all got a good laugh about that later during the meal.

The waiters do seem to catch onto who wants to have fun and who would rather be left alone.

Really a fun place if you are the type to enjoy it!

Well you better learn to like green beans before your trip! :rotfl:

C'mon- they're good for you! :teeth:

Ilovestitch - don't think of them as "those poor girls" LOL. They purposely got in trouble. DDbest friend kept putting her elbows on the table and gave attitude. And DD as a joke when Aunt Janice came, she tossed one of her chicken nuggets on to DDbest friends plate. After she was sent to sit with our "cousins" she got up and came back to sit with us without permission. That's when she had to apologize to everyone. Got some great pictures!!!! They had planned from the start that they would do something to get into "trouble". One of the first things that Aunt Janice said was that you had to ask to go to the bathroom. So I put my hand right up, she said I couldn't leave until I got a potty pass...well she brought me one...and I kept it to put in our scrapbook. She never asked for it back!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl2:
