Which would you choose. Family of 4 (boys ages 7 and 5)

5 day With 2 stops castaway on the dream Dec 19-24, 2022
Or
7 day eastern Caribbean on fantasy Dec 12-17, 2022

they are roughly the same price (7day is about $200 more) for the exact same room.

first cruise for my boys and the whole families first time on Disney!

I would do the 5 night. The two stops at CC would trump total nights for me at that age and I think 5 nights is also plenty for that age. I have two boys a few years older. The clubs on board and Castaway Cay are their favorite parts of DCL. While many people view more nights as more desirable, and I get it, just stepping off the ship directly onto a family friendly private island with kids is sooo much better than the other ports, and booking excursions etc. In a few years, and once they’ve been to CC more that will change. But first cruise and their ages taken into consideration, I’d totally make the decision based on the 2 stop at CC itinerary.

Easy choice: Eastern Fantasy with 2 more nights.

Add me to the 2 days at Castaway - I wish I could do cruise when they’d go there 3 or 4 times a week. 😊

The more nights the better so I would choose the Fantasy Caribbean.

As much as I love CC and it's really the only port I care about, more nights on the ship would win out for me.

7 days, for sure!! We did the 7 day cruise on the Fantasy and I could have stayed 2 more! :o)

If the ports of call are places you want to visit in the Caribbean, then 7-night Fantasy. But, if it's the cruise for the family to see if you enjoy being on the ship and all things Disney plus two stops at CC, go with the Dream. I always enjoy more time on the ship and more days at sea. I enjoy being pampered.

For approximately the same price I would definitely go with the 7 night cruise. That will give you enough time to really settle in and enjoy the experience of being on your first cruise. Getting to see the Caribbean will also make the cruise more of a travel experience, more of a whole vacation, than only sailing around the Bahamas. You'll also get the Drawn to Magic experience at your second night at Animator's Palate, which won't be offered on a 5 night cruise. That is one of those special Disney touches.

The 7 night Eastern is my favorite! However I will concede that with two kiddos that young a slightly shorter cruise and 2 days at CC could be a great fit too. Especially for a first cruise. Our MINIMUM number of nights is 5.

We have done both and loved both, with boys of similar ages and age gaps thru the years, so you will love either choice!

Things we had to think about:
--Days off from school. We usually sail the December-ish time of year and have to keep in mind missing days from school (& work).
--Homework and projects due. We are usually doing homework in Cabanas one day.
--Traffic around the holidays (since you are planning Dec). We drive from PA so that is always a factor.
--If you're flying, airline tickets for that time of year.
--They are young enough not to notice the difference from 1 beach to another. So 2 days at CC compared to St. Thomas/Tortola wont make a difference to them.
--Even though the 2 extra sea days are great at around 5 total cruise days our boys got skittish and eager to get back home. As they got older this changed, but the shorter trip was better for their psyche when they were younger.
--Taking a cruise during December shortens the Christmas time at home. We find that over the past 8+ years of Merrytime cruises that the Christmas season seems very short. You spend time preparing for a (great) cruise, you're on the cruise, then the euphoria when you return. That could cut into you normal family visits, Christmas shopping, Christmas preparation. So a shorter cruise may not make such a dent in the "at home" Christmas experience. Though maybe you want to miss out on some family holiday experiences! (We have used the cruise as an excuse to miss Thanksgiving for several years!)

For us, as a family, just getting away is worth the cruise, regardless of destination or length of cruise. The ports, though also great, aren't the highlight of the cruise. Our first cruise was one CC on a 4 day Dream cruise. And we were so enamored from it that we have been coming back ever since.

Again either choice will be the correct decision. Please return and tell us how your cruise turns out, with pictures!

Seven nights is better than five nights. The ships themselves are basically identical. Yes CC is fun, but you'll see much more at the other Caribbean ports.

I'm firmly in the "longer is better" camp, so the 7 night would win out over the 5 night for me.

Fantasy for sure. It's hard enough to end a cruise, but on Christmas eve??? Unless the cruise was followed by a stay at Star Wars Hotel I'd feel let down.

+1 that the 2nd night at animator's is worth serious consideration. I'd personally always choose longer but I'm also not as enamored with Castaway Cay as others seem to be (*ducks*).

One other consideration, I don't know how much travel you have to do to get to the cruise but I would NOT want to be trying to fly anywhere or travel on a significant number of highways on Christmas Eve to go home. Regardless of whether or not you personally celebrate Christmas, enough people travel then that you run the risk of prematurely killing your post-vacation buzz by sitting in traffic or waiting for a delayed flight in an overcrowded airport.

I've flown out of Orlando on Christmas Eve multiple times & it's fine. It's actually less busy than the week before, because many people try not to travel on the actual holiday. If you look at airline fares you'll notice that fares for Christmas Eve & Christmas Day are typically cheaper than fares for several days before.

I think the Fantasy is beautiful but I can't stand the shows in the WD Theater. After our first Fantasy cruise, I thought maybe I didn't give it a chance enough, so we sailed again. Umm, no. No more Fantasy cruises for us. Maybe I'm just ruined by Twice Charmed, Golden Mickeys, & Disney Dreams, all wonderful shows and now I'm spoiled. Believe is ok but seeing that a few times, I don't really feel the need to see it again, unlike the other 3 that I can see a million times and never get tired of them.
So I'd vote for the 5 nt double dip.

Take advantage of being able to do the 7 day at the cheaper per day price in the off season. When your kids get older, it will be harder to miss school. That’s why the 5 day cruise is more per day - more people can travel at that time. Very soon you will miss the days when you could pull your kids out of school.
