OK - so I booked our flight from Birmingham to Orlando on Southwest with the great $49 fare but I only booked one way as the special ends October 1 and we leave October 2. I was starting to worry about our return flight as the lowest I could find was $96.

On a fluke today, I checked Delta for our return flight and it's $49 too!  It was over $100 before. This works out great as the flight is 3 hours later (6 pm) and I can check our luggage at the resort!

I'm not sure about other cities but just thought I would share the good news!

I just checked for our November trip and a couple of days ago out of Nashville (we are in Knoxville) it was running $1100.00 for 4 tickets on Southwest, I just checked Delta out of Nashville $119.00 round trip so total of $476.00  Now that is worth driving almost 3 hours for!! Thanks for the heads up!

I never can find them, where do you look, we have a 200.00 credit to use by sept. from a trip canceled last year from Katrinia, everytime there prices are way high? Is there a special site besides delta.com?

Ours is $69 each way out of Louisville! I can't believe it! I wonder if SW will bring prices down tomorrow to at least match? We can get the Delta direct flight at 10:10 AM to MCO but the direct one back that's on sale is the 10:30 AM MCO-SDF. We don't want to come back that early. The 6:00 PM direct back is not on sale.

Should we book the SDF-MCO morning flight one way then hope the other flight will drop in price?

Has anybody done two separate airlines? Delta on the way down, SW on the way back? Trying to get the best deal on the flight times we want.

Or should we just wait for SW to have a sale?

I like Delta's assigned seats but the Louisville flights are SMALL! 39 people. Good prices go fast!

YES! We booked SW on the way down for $49 and now have booked Delta on the way back for $49. There is absolutely no problem doing that. A big benefit with Delta that SW does NOT have is checking your luggage at your resort, so I'm glad that Delta is our return flight. PLUS, we got a better flight time (6pm instead of 3pm).

I would DEFINITELY go ahead and book your $69 rate and wait for either Delta or another airline to go down to the price you want for your return flight. Good Luck!

ARGH! Flights are back up to $293 rt for us this AM! I hate having to check this airlines constantly. Its such a pain.

Well, guess we'll be waiting for SW to drop some fares. Keep our fingers crossed!

It's still pretty high out of Huntsville, $300 roundtrip...I'm off to check Nashville.

Mommyintn,

I'm from the Knoxville area too and my tickets on Delta in August are around $300/each. Granted I bought them a couple of months ago but they are up $100 each since last August. Can you believe how much it costs to fly out of Knoxville now :furious: I would be driving to Nashville too for the price you got.... :thumbsup2

I feel your pain, I would much rather fly out of Knoxville but checking the prices last week and the cheapest price was $338 :furious: Then I started checking Tri-Cities and they were lower at $289 but still...My dh was not going to drive to Nashville until he heard how much we were saving. :) Just bought our tickets today of course they are strange times like leaving at 7am coming back at 6pm oh well though. We should get together a Knoxville DIS meet sometime, I know there are other Knoxvillians on here! Talk to you later. :thumbsup2

Same here!

We were looking at $318 per person flying non-stop from Memphis to Orlando on Northwest, so when Southwest came out with their $49 sale from Nashville to Orlando, we decided it would be worth the trip. When a $31 Ding came, it quickly became a no-brainer.

I'll put it this way. For the same price as two round trip tickets from Memphis, I can buy a tank of gas for the roundtrip drive to Nashville, stay at Hotel Preston near the airport the night before our 9am flight, park our car all week, pay for our airline tickets on Southwest, pay for our rental car the whole time we're in Orlando, and still have $100 left over.

All for a 212 mile drive. I think we made the right decision, don't you? ;)

We live just outside of Nashville. We were planning on driving to Orlando until we got an e-mail from Southwest about their low fares. Me, DH and DSx3 are flying roundtrip in August for $462.40! :yay:

You can't beat that considering the price of gasoline and the fact that we were going to stay in a DTD hotel the first night to "recooperate" from the drive.

When you calculate the gas price for the drive down and back, the meals/snacks for our approx. 12 hour drive each way, the room rate plus fees for the one night at the DTD hotel, the meals that night in DTD, and breakfast the next morning that we had already budgeted for -- It is actually cheaper for us to fly :thumbsup2 .

My DH is more excited about flying because he sooo was not looking forward to driving there and back, because he knows I would stick him with most of the driving. :teeth:

FYI: Southwest Deals end July 27th and requires travel between now and October 1st. I looked on the Delta site and found the $49.00 price mentioned earlier as well. Wish I had known this before because of the resort check-in perk. But, oh well no big deal. We do like Southwest and we got a great deal. No complaints here. :goodvibes

I am going throught the same problem!!!! I was ready to book SW from SDF...and they were gone!! At this point it might be cheaper to drive to WDW! When are you going?

I checked and my fare is still $49 - just bumping!
I just wanted to say thanks to you! Because of your post, we are now flying to WDW instead of driving. This is a Godsend for my wife, who has fibromyalgia. Car trips over 2 hours really wipe her out, and we were really worried about how she would hold up after the drive down. The last time I checked Delta flights from Birmingham to Orlando, they were $235 roundtrip. Now, we are flying for $98 roundtrip per person. Thank you SO much!

NO PROBLEM!! I'm so glad I could help! When are you flying? We may be on the same flight (mine is returning to Bhm on 10/2 at 6:05pm).

Does this mean since you will be flying instead of driving that you will actually skip meals a couple of days? :confused3 We eat everyday whether we fly, drive, stay at home, stay at a cheap hotel, stay at an expensive hotel, etc....:goodvibes

We're flying down on September 28th, and returning on October 7th. We didn't get the 6:05 flight because it would have made the tix $145 each, but the 2:05 flight was $98 each. Since we were going to drive, we didn't really have anything planned and didn't purchase park tix for that last day anyway, so it isn't a big deal for us.

Tinkerrn,
We are going 12/2-12/8 so luckily I still have time to find a deal! Keeping my fingers crossed. Currently the cheapest tix SW has are $135 OW! So I might as well book full price through Delta and get ME service. I'm just really disappointed that a decent rate came and went so quickly on Delta out of SDF. I mean only offering that rate for 1 evening? What's up with that? I check Delta and SW both daily (multiple times a day). So I guess I'll just keeping looking and hoping.

Good luck to you!

No, no -- after rereading I see the confusion. We won't go without food. I live with a DH and 3 boys - I can't get groceries in the house fast enough without them scarfing them down. :lmao:

We are staying 7 nights, 8 days on site w/dining plan. When we were driving down we were going to add an extra night/day (making it 8 nights and 9 days) because we were going to stay at the Royal Plaza (on the first night) to "recooperate" from the 12 hour drive. Plus, we were going to eat at Planet Hollywood that night in DTD, and eat the breakfast buffet the next morning at the hotel. Plus, we had budgeted for snacks/meals on the drive down and back and the gas $$$. That's what I was referring to. When we calculate those savings (the amount that we would have spent when driving) -- it is cheaper for us to fly. :thumbsup2 Of course, we lose that extra day/night. We are no longer 8 nights/9 days --- We are back to 7 nights/8 days --- But, oh well! Not driving makes my DH soooooo happy. You can't beat a happy DH
