Myself, my wife and our three children (16, 9 and 7) are taking a 21 day road trip August/September this year. We will be in Anaheim for my wife's 40th birthday, and would like to celebrate by doing something unique to the area.

We already have our three Disneyland Resort days planned in elsewhere, and are both running the Disneyland half-marathon the next day (6th September), so would like to do something outside of the parks and during the day (we will need a relatively early night for the run the next morning) to celebrate.

I don't mind an hour or so drive, if necessary. All ideas welcome!!

The San Diego Zoo, or Sea world is about 1 to 2 hrs drive.. Sea world is an easy park to do. The Zoo is a long day , lots of walking up and down hills, but they have buses to get you from one place to the other..
Huntington Beach, is not too far away, good for a day trip.. or other beaches around the area .
Knott's Berry Farm. good for crazy coaster riders.. about 10 mins away from DL.
couple of Malls, there is an indoor flea market not far with a free shuttle from your hotel.. pretty fun to walk around..
Bubba Gumps and or the Cheese Cake Factory for a meal.. along Katella . DTD, for shopping and eating and live entertainment .

Pretty much everything at Anaheim GardenWalk or on Katella is a chain. Some people would love a birthday dinner at a Cheesecake Factory. As far as unique to the area, there are the restaurants in the hotels and Goofy's Kitchen does a character dinner. There's also the Pasta in the Park party that DL does before the race. It's not birthday specific, but it is unique to race weekend. Will you have a car? What about a restaurant at Newport or Huntington Beach?

Thanks, but as much as we both like The Cheesecake Factory, I am looking for something that we haven't done before.

We will have a car, so more than happy to drive to Newport or Huntington Beach. Where would you recommend to eat there?

Brunch at Duke's in Huntington Beach would be a fantastic birthday meal. You could get a table overlooking the water. You definitely need reservations, though!
