4 day trip other than Disney, suggestions?

I am looking for some suggestions for a short 4 day trip. We currently have a WDW vacation scheduled for Sept 15-19 at Beach Club. Thinking of cancelling that and just going somewhere else.

Looking for some suggestions for other great cities to visit.

We may take the kids, or maybe just adults.

I was thinking of places like San Francisco, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Baltimore as a few ideas.

Give me some input on those cities or other great suggestions.

Vegas is great, and four days is a perfect way to whet your appetite and have a first taste, but be prepared, it is just "different". Along with NYC, it is one of the few places where you really feel like you are on a movie/tv set portraying what the "hype" says it should be. There is no greater concentration of first-class dining in the world, and many of the shows are amazing (eg, mystere by cirque du soleil is truly mind-blowing), and there you can get a taste of what a truly "deluxe" hotel room and hotel amenities (pool, room service, etc) should feel like, but be prepared for some of the "negatives" that do give some more sheltered people a bit of a concern (but I like to think just add color). Gambling is almost everywhere (you will literally see slot machines as you leave the plane), the east side of the "strip" (ie, side with mgm and bally's) has a mile or so stretch where every twenty feet there are people trying to distribute flyers for strip clubs and escorts (and the sidewalk over there is covered with the dropped flyers), and you are expected to tip "everyone", and I mean everyone.

What kinds of things do you like to do? If you're the more outdoorsy type, it's the beginning of foliage season in northern New England.

Or as far as cities, how about Boston? Or if your passports are all set, Montreal is always fun.

My favorite cities are Charleston SC and San Antonio TX. Lots to do in both!

DW and I honeymooned to New England. Flew into Providence and went to Boston, Marthas Vineyard, and spent some time in Connecticut, Rhode Island and other parts of Massachusetts.

We have been married 7 years this month. We have been to Washington DC, Black Hills, Wisconsin Dells, So Cal, New England, Gulf Coast of Florida, Disney Cruise, and Orlando probably 4 times.

My 2 favorite too! I love Charleston for its beautiful architecture and there are some awesome restaurants. The sight-seeing is fantastic. San Antonio is also beautiful and so affordable. The Riverwalk is fun-and lots of delicious food.

Fun adult cities are New Orleans and Las Vegas

Washington, D.C. is a great trip if your kids are middle school age or so.

San Francisco and the region is nice. If its just adults, head north to the wine country. If its kids, stop at the Santa Cruz boardwalk and spend one night in Monterey.

I like New York and Boston, both are big enough to be what you make them, Boston has a ton of history


Grand Canyon is incredible.
Strange trips, Talesin in spring green Wisconsin, mammoth cave in Kentucky are both a little more off the beaten path, but a lot of fun. North shore of Lake Superior if you like to hike.

Love New Orleans! Great for adults only or kids, swamp tour is great ,i also went with my mom who was attending a conference so i was on my own for the majority of the trip and it was suprisingly great! Loved the ghost tour as well. food is incredible. Im from the west coast so Las vegas is a easy go to for us, and we enjoy it everytime. We drove through on our way home from disneyland last time, and our teenage kids loved it, but dont think id take them for more then a day or two.

I vote for Pigeon Forge, TN. You have Dollywood and the Smokies. It's very manageable to go there for 4 days. There might be some fall foliage there, too. It's a very reasonable vacation.

If you like a big city give Chicago some thought. There are many museums and theaters there.

Williamsburg has Busch Gardens and history to enjoy.

Gettysburg is celebrating 150 years this year. It might be neat to go there on a special anniversary.

Do a National Park anywhere you would like to go.

I think i depends on your reason for not going to WDW.....is it budget, or a needed change from theme parks....or whatever.

City trips are good, and can be less expensive, but they have a much lower entertainment value. Rooms are expensive for what you get and most attractions are individually priced and you may do several in a day. We like DC, NYC, Atlanta, San Fransisco. All kid friendly. If you want to relax, a beach trip may be a great choice. Hilton Head, SC or the Outer Banks of NC are good choices. For a historical trip, Savannah, Charleston, Saint Augustine, are good choices.

If you are just WDWed out, maybe a non WDW Flordia trip. Do Universal, Sea World, Lego Land....etc. Stay off site, though I would stay at a Universal Hotel at least one night to get the line pass.

Chicago
New York City
San Francisco/Napa Valley

Enjoyed them all. Do a search on places that interest you to see if there are things that interest you.

For more outdoorsy places:
Yellowstone
Grand Canyon
Mesa Verde (Southwestern Colorado)
All are great locations that we enjoyed.

Rocky Mountain National Park gets my vote. It's absolutely gorgeous--and the best value around. For $20 you can get a week-long pass. That's per car--not per person. You can stand on the Great Divide, drive the highest continuous paved highway in the states; see wildlife and do hikes from super easy to hard.

I agree as well. We feel so relaxed after a cruise. (its a totally different kind of vacation than a city, which I enjoy too). A cruise you can balance relaxation with some kind of excursion or 2 (on a short cruise). Best of both worlds, IMO.
