Hey does anyone know what kind of headphones are used on commercial airlines for movie viewing nowadays? Are they the small plug-in type like in walkman's, or are they the large plug like in home stereos?

We don't fly much and for our upcoming WDW trip this October with the kids would like to enjoy the movies without having to pay that ridiculous charge for headphones. We're flying Continental. Thanks for any help.

Can you do that...bring your own headphones??

We just flew from the east to the west coast 2 weeks ago...they were the small, plug-in type.

On the way TO California, I didn't want to watch the movie, but I told the flight attendant I just wanted them for my 3 kids, and she said, "Oh, I'm not going to charge you for the kids!" So...it was free!!

On the way back, I wanted them for all 4 of us; the guy next to me got free ones (because they had asked him if he'd be willing to move to another seat), and he gave them to me, so I asked for headphones for the kids...not only was I charged, but it was $5/each. AND the movie stunk (Spy Kids).

We had had a 2 hour delay...sat on the runway while the crew, then maintenance, made some computer repairs. I got talking with a woman in a nearby seat, and she said that when that happened once before, the flight attendants handed out free headphones to everyone. This time, when we were getting ready to taxi out for takeoff, the flight attendant announced that people had asked if we'd get the headphones for free, but that "no", because of their contract with "whomever", they couldn't do that.

Long answer for such a short question, huh?! ;)

they are the ones like the ones that attach to your walkman or cd player. the ones I had on my last flight has 2 prongs to plug in. but one time when I flew from pittsburgh to LAX I plugged my walkman headphones into the plug and I was able to listen but only in one ear.

On a recent (June) flight on Delta, they were collecting a fee for the movie EVEN IF YOU BROUGHT YOUR OWN HEADSET! I couldn't believe it. This was announced on both legs of our trip.

Might just be Delta, but it's probably not worth the hassle of BYO headsets.

Boy, they really get you coming and going! But I shouldn't be surprised I guess since they pretty much serve a captive audience. I'm happy that we got a relatively good deal on our airfare(compared to what it was just a few weeks ago). I think we'll pack a couple of personal cd players in our carryon bags anyway so if the movie is worth seeing maybe we'll just give it a try and see what they say. I would be interested in hearing the airlines' argument against allowing me to use them.

BTW, if that is the Mary from Mousesaver's who responded, I would like to say THANK YOU in a BIG WAY for all of the extremely helpful information you have provided all of us on your website. It has really made me and my family smarter(and wealthier) consumer's when it comes to planning our big vacation(Magic cruise and WDW stay). Keep up the great work!

Thank everyone for your responses. I'll let you know what happens.

Northwest lets you to use your own headseats. They sell them for $1.00 with the proceeds going to children's charities.

I just flew from Detroit to Portland a few weeks ago.

Do you mean me? Nope, I'm not the one, but you had some lovely compliments for her. :D

TommyJoe, yes, I'm the Mary who runs MouseSavers.

Thanks for the kind words about the site. I really have a lot of fun finding the best bargains on Disney stuff and putting all the information together in one place. Guess I was born to do research! LOL

I'm so glad to hear you've found it helpful!

Paying for the headphones is a concept forigen to me. I'm guessing thats because the lenght of my flight to DW. Its about 2 1/2 hours from Dallas to Orlando. We usually fly American but last time flew Delta. Both airlines didnt offer a movie but did have video that consisted of several 1/2 hour programs. A news program, a comedy, a sports show, and some other report) But there was no charge for the headphones
