Would like a list of NS car insurance companies that allow you to transfer the 3rd party liability from your own vehicle to a rental vehicle while vacationing in Florida.
Not talking about the SEF27 for collision etc but liability insurance against being sued for causing an accident.
My car insurance company (Portage Mutual through Fairway Ins.) has told me that our car insurance liability will not cover the rental and that we have to buy the rental agency's liability coverage. My son's company says his is covered for that but he's in a group plan.

What insurance companies do allow you to transfer your liability to a rental?

I believe you need to have an endorsement added to your policy which covers liability for damage to non-owned automobiles which is an additional cost (at least that's what ours is called through Co-operators here in Alberta). If you don't have this added to your auto policy, then yes you do need to take the rental agency's insurance. Also if you have a credit card that includes rental insurance, remember, a credit card will only cover damage to the car, not liability claims.

Our agent told us there was nothing they could add to the policy for liability and we would definitely have to get it at the rental desk. We have the SEF27 for collision but not 3rd party liability.

I was told the same thing ...basically I was covered for collision but needed to buy 3rd party liability

I was wondering if I was the only one  A friend who has insurance with the same companies as I do was told that he was covered.
My son's insurance is with The Personal, a group policy through Holland College and he was told everything was covered and he could increase the liability to $2,000,000. if he wanted.
I wish every company would do the same so it wouldn't be so confusing. I noticed that if you're a Manitoba resident that you can get rental car insurance to cover everything for about $2/day.

Wow! One of the few times (well, only time) I wish I lived in Manitscoldhere!

In BC, I have rental insur through my ICBC car insurance, a yearly policy. It was an extra add on- Road Star. But now I'm going to check to make sure I have that liability! Thanks for the heads up. I also have insur with Visa, and didn't realize this wasn't covered.

Hmmm... I'd always assumed that the coverage for non-owned vehicle rider on our Ontario insurance policy would fully cover us on rental vehicles in FL. I suppose I should make sure that it covers our liability in addition to damage to the vehicle.

I have called our car insurance (President's Choice S&Y insurance company-we are in Southern Ontario) and they told me we had the same coverage on a car rental anywhere in North America as we do on our home vehicles- we have 2 million liability......so we have always declined car rental insurance at the counter.....I take our policy with us...... so far we have not had to find out if we REALLY are covered......

The only problem is that if you DO get in an accident, your insurance rates here go up, because now you are no longer "claims free". Our neighbour was rear-ended in California in rental car with autopac insurance, and while he claims were paid, her insurance went up 25% because she lost her good driver discount. So while she only paid 50.00 for her 5 day rental, she ended up paying an extra 400.00 on her vehicle - for years. If you go through a third party - any accident won't affect your insurance.

Yeah, but what is the good to have insurance if you're scared to use it. If it was just for a week I wouldn't mind buying it but it's 3 weeks this time.
If we were driving down in our own vehicle and had an accident then our insurance would be used. Sorry! Just arguing with myself.
I guess it's a moot point anyway since our insurance won't cover it at all.
