I'm so sorry. Does your husband like kitties? Maybe you could get him another friend. Of course it would never take his buddy's place, but it may soften the pain a little. A cat wouldn't be as high maintance as a puppy and they like to cuddle. Just a thought. Could a friend or relative take your dog to the vet for you? I took my mom's poodle for her. She just couldn't bring herself to do it and it needed to be done.
I've had to put down several pets. It isn't easy. I went back when my dear dog April was dying of cancer. I held her in my arms until she started to drift off. She was afraid and she needed me. I just couldn't stay until she was actually gone. I told the vet of my plans in advance. That way she had me with her until she was dozing, but I didn't have to watch her die.
The other times I either didn't take the pet or didn't go back. I think that is all right, too. Depends on you and the pet. I'll be thinking of you, your DH and your fur baby.
