..

I'm so sorry. Does your husband like kitties? Maybe you could get him another friend. Of course it would never take his buddy's place, but it may soften the pain a little. A cat wouldn't be as high maintance as a puppy and they like to cuddle. Just a thought. Could a friend or relative take your dog to the vet for you? I took my mom's poodle for her. She just couldn't bring herself to do it and it needed to be done.

I've had to put down several pets. It isn't easy. I went back when my dear dog April was dying of cancer. I held her in my arms until she started to drift off. She was afraid and she needed me. I just couldn't stay until she was actually gone. I told the vet of my plans in advance. That way she had me with her until she was dozing, but I didn't have to watch her die.

The other times I either didn't take the pet or didn't go back. I think that is all right, too. Depends on you and the pet. I'll be thinking of you, your DH and your fur baby.

I'm so sorry you are going through this right now. I had to have two of my pets put to sleep and it was so hard. You're right about there being something in their eyes to tell you when it's right. You have to do what's right for your dog and ease his pain, you are doing the right thing.
As hard as it was I was with both my pets when they were put down, I felt I owed it to them to be with them in their time of need. Do what you feel you can emotionally handle but perhaps someone that knows your dog could be with him (if you can't do it).

and help you get through what you must.

I have had too many loved pets put to sleep...for me...I do not stay. I usually have my husband take them when it is time and inevitable. But one time...my last with my 15 year old dog...I was the one who unfortunately had to take him and there was no buying any more time...

I hugged him and cried with him as long as I could and then I realized he needed to go. So I said Goodbye and told him I would always love him and left him in the caring hands of our Vet. I knew he would be comforted by her as I could not bear to see him leave me.

You have to do what makes it seems easier for you to remember and live with.

It is never easy....they hold such a place in our hearts.

So sorry to hear that I know what it feels like to lose a loving animal :( !!!

(((((((((((((((((((((C.Ann))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Lots of hugs for you, C.Ann! I remember when it was time for my pup I had as a kid. My parents couldn't bring themselves to do it. It's a very hard decision. Bless you and your DH.

C. Ann, I know how hard this is.

I have had 2 dogs put to sleep. I held both of them so they knew I was with them and they wouldn't be afraid. You have to do what is right for you. They do NOT suffer. Alll of the vets I have dealt with are very caring and will be with the dog if you can't.

It was winter and the ground was frozen, so I had ours cremated then brought the remains home, buried the remains and planted a tree over them. We now have a "Julie" tree and a "Rascal" tree.

{{{Hugs}}} to you, and good luck tomorrow.

C.Ann I feel for you. My dad was dying with cancer when we had to put his dog down. My father's cancer had opened and at the same time our dog had a tumor return that we had removed several months earlier. Of course the dog would lick it and it opended and we had the problem with staph and cross contamination. They did xrays on the dog and found her cancer was everywhere. Normally we would have waited it out until it was effecting her but we just couldn't risk it with my dad. The vet came to our home and put her down. Then I burried her in the back yard. Hardest thing I ever did.
My thougths are with you I know loosing a pet is so hard but then when it is the special pet of a loved one it makes it worse Wish I had words to say but I don't know.
Hugs and prayers..

{{{hugs}}} for you C.Ann during this difficult time. :(

C. Ann I am so sorry. I know this is such a hard time for you. Do what feels right to you. I think I would try to stay if I could, but I'm not sure that I could. {{{{{HUGS}}}}} I will keep you in my prayers.

Oh C. Ann, I've never had to put a pet down, but I sure do understand how you're feeling. {{{Hugs}}}}

Having to put our dog down was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

We chose to be there (at the Vet) when he was given the injection. It all happened so quickly.

We were the last voices he heard as we were stroking his fur and telling him we'd see him on the other side.

Then we brought him home and he now "rests" between two trees.

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing. Some don't like to be there. Others get a sense of closure by being there.

In your heart of hearts, you'll do what is best.

(((hugs)))

Putting a dog down is one of the hardest things you'll have to do. Each situation is very individual. If you don't want to be present, then don't. Just realize that your decision can be a very humane, kind gesture. Actually, the hardest time is usually the time preceding the actual euthanasia. The anticipation of grief is supposed to be the hardest. But coming home to that void is difficult.

For me, getting another pet very soon is soothing. Many disagree with that but a new puppy or dog reduces the amount of time grieving because of the distraction. Just realize that you will never replace the previous pet. But you create a new friendship.

It hurts. Hang in there.

I'm so sorry... I had to put down my beloved Auggie Doggie when she was 13, she too had had a slow decline and was in constant pain and had little quality of life. I realized I had to suffer some to keep her from suffering alot. As for the acutal act, it was very peaceful and I talked to her and held her as she left me. This poem also helped me....

If It Should Be

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer so,
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me until the end,
I know in time that you will see,
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve, it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

C.Ann -

I am so sorry for you and your DH. I know putting an animal to sleep is the hardest thing to do . . .They are, after all, like a child to you . . .

I put my cat to sleep 3 years ago and it was the toughest thing I ever had to do . . .For me, I stayed with her until she drifted off to sleep . . .It was very hard and very emotional, but, I knew she was going somewhere where she wouldn't feel anymore pain and where she could be peaceful.

Best of luck to you . . .(((((HUGS)))))

I am very sorry for you. It is very difficult to put a dog down and I know what you are going through.

Oh C. Ann, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. My prayers and hugs are with you.

This is so hard--I'm surprised to find tears running as I read the posts. We had to put down a family dog in the 70's and DH stayed with her--I was crying too hard and thought I was upsetting people in the waiting room. More recently DS and DH waited with our cat of 18 years. We have her ashes at our home. We were scheduled to see the musical "Cats" less than a week afterwards and tried to make it okay by looking for the costume which most looked like her. We found a few!

Pets are so important; our golden retriever always sits with me when I am upset. Sometimes she knows it better than I do.

I'll hold you in my thoughts and prayers.

Just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you on this day :)
