38 Papers Drop Doonesbury

a private company making a business decision. much like rondstat, slimfast dropping whoopie, or theaters not showing F 9/11. Private businesses can conduct themselves as they like (w/in the law) in order to improve the bottom line.

FCC fining stern & the like. big problem with that. THAT is censorship, as it is the government limiting speech.

I will say the following proudly:

I DO NOT SUPPORT GARRY TRUDEAU - I DO NOT LIKE DOONESBURY!

I DO SUPPORT THE WAR IN IRAQ!

I DO NOT SUPPORT IRAQI INSURGENTS!

I DO SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!

I DO BELIEVE THE AMERICAN MEDIA HAS UNDERMINED THE US EFFORTS BY PAINTING A BIASED PICTURE OF THE REAL PROGRESS THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE IN IRAQ!

I BELIEVE THE WORLD IS BOTH SAFER AND A BETTER PLACE WITHOUT SADDAM IN POWER!

I DO NOT AND WILL NOT TOW THE PARTY LINE, NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE HAS TO SAY ABOUT IT!

I DO THINK FOR MYSELF!

Oy, I'm relatively supportive of the war in Iraq, but let's get some perspective here. It's a comic strip! His viewpoint on politics is... well... his viewpoint. More power to him. I don't generally agree with his politics, but it's an amusing comic strip. I'd much rather see Judge Parker or The Phantom (king of the !?) be removed

I agree with the OP in that Doonesberry belongs in the op ed page like it does now. I bet some of the 38 papers carried the strip in the op ed page anyway. It should have been up to the local market. Same with Howard Stern. Let each market decide on whether to air his show (ratings). Clearchannel shouldn't have banned Stern earlier this year, and I'm tired of corporate radio and media telling me what I want to read and what I listen to.

As for Doonesberry, His antiwar slant is only a part of the storylines in the strip. Several years ago, BD was in football, and his helmet had a bunch of Nike swooshes on it. It was good commentary on how Nike is taking over sports sponsorship. His views on college education are funny too.

Finally, around here the editorial cartoon gets more negative reader reaction than Doonesberry.

I'm pretty conservative, I support the President Bush, and I believe we're doing the right thing in Iraq.

But I still read Doonesbury, and usually enjoy it. Then again, if some newspapers want to drop it, that's their right.

supporting Gary Trudeau and Michael Moore in expressing their opinion is most certainly NOT unAmerican, "Mr. McCarthy". or is waving the flag more improtant than the First Amendment?

for me, the flag has no meaning if the ideals it stands for are dead.

I'd have to agree that Doonesbury probably belongs in the Op-Ed section and I don't have a problem with papers keeping the strip or removing the strip -- that's the paper's perogative.

But, for those who think Trudeau is "anti-war" or "anti-Bush" or any of that -- did you ever read the strip in the Clinton administration? Trudeau's an equal opportunity political offender -- he doesn't simply rail against one side or the other.

Poor, poor Mr. Trudeau ... his strip is being dropped by one distributor and from 38 newspapers. And some call this censorship? He is prefectly able to find a new distributor and sign a new contract or arrange his own distribution network. Alas, no one reports how many newspapers will continue to run his comic strip both daily and on Sunday.

How easily people forget. Good grief, some of his digs at Clinton were hysterical. Did Clinton's supporters whine and cry? waaa waaa waaa make the bad man stop making fun of me. sheesh !
