35mm camera question

although I like my digital camera, I don't think it's quite as good as a 'real' one, so I would like to get a new 35mm camera for our trip. Most important features are Point and Click and a decent Zoom lens - I want to be able to take pics of Katie when she isn't aware of the camera, so I would like to be able to sit reasonably far away from her and still get nice close-ups.

I don't know anything about cameras, and in particular about zoom lengths - what kind of numbers should I be looking for. Any brands that are recommended? I would pay upto about £150.
