.

I am sure you are proud of your "vast knowledge" but there has to be a nicer way to show it off. It definitely was your wording, it sounded like you got pleasure out of making the CM feel stupid, and the fact that you are still bragging about it years later? just makes you look bad.

This all happened in 2001, so take it with a grain of salt. I can't just change the past at a snap of my fingers. What's done is done. I'm not sure how bad the 'damage' was, but I felt good at the time knowing that I knew more than the CM. She was probably happy to know I knew so much and we were very courteous to each other, and I know she stumped me too on a number of things. It was nice to have that little tete-a-tete with a CM.

I think if your original post was like this, mentioning that it was fun and you were courteous to each other, would have gone over better. Or, if you had asked about fun/memorable exchanges with cast members, perhaps there would have been nicer responses. It's generally not a good thing to upstage someone at their work. As someone who has worked in a theme park I can tell you I would just be annoyed. I've had people try to quiz me on my knowledge and I remember being unenthused.

My sister is a CM and I have absolutely no doubt that countless people know more Disney trivia than she does. Heck, even I do! She'd never been to WDW before starting work so her knowledge of any facts and trivia about the parks there is definitely limited.

There is no pop quiz on Disney trivia to be employed there. The CMs in no way purport to be experts in every aspect of the company.

I think she'd just walk away puzzled as to why it gave someone so much satisfaction to feel they'd 'upstaged' her. Either that or completely forget about you as just another annoying guest.

Ha, I used to work in a comic book store. We got trivia nerds "upstaging" us all the time, and no, it didn't bother me one bit. I doubt you caused that cast member to go home that day feeling "down in the dumps". I doubt she even remembered you by the time she was on the road home. You were just a very small part of a very long, busy day.

Personally, even if I do happen to know more than the cast member, I don't start dumping info on them. Instead, I make sure they know just how much I appreciate the special attention and the effort they're going to for me. Because I remember exactly how tedious some trivia nerds could be (though I'm not saying you were quite as obnoxious as all that, since you say you were courteous), I try to be polite, and receptive to whatever they want to tell me.

Just because I know something, that doesn't mean I have to share it with everyone.

A couple trips ago, we booked the Christmas Sleigh Ride around Fort Wilderness. The driver was lovely, and very keen to tell us all sorts of "secrets", all of which I already knew and some of which I knew were inaccurate. So what? I let him talk and enjoyed the ride. In the grand scheme of things, it just didn't matter.

How can you all be so brutal to me? It was an enjoyable experience, and there was even a little magic spread around that day. Frankly, I'm getting tired of so many negative responses to posts I make. All I'm doing is trying to make conversation with recollections about past trips. I don't need this type of aggravation.

Are you feeling a bit uh upstaged?

Do you think he'll be very disappointed if people don't say they're sorry, tell him not to mind all the meanies on this board, and beg him to stay? ;)

Years ago we were at the Kidstop area in the Canadian pavilion. My child was busy doing the craft and we were chatting with the CM who was from our city. Others stopped by and asked the population of Canada. He was off by like 10 million so I corrected him. Then I felt bad. But come on how can you be in University and not know the population of your country! And he was representing us.

Maybe it was how you said it.

I have no clue the population of my country...or my state.. or even my city. I'm a little fuzzy on the population of my household most days!

I'd have done the same! Some things are just too important to let slide.

Edited to add: Although I'd be mildly embarrassed that I DID know the population, versus wondering why the CM didn't.

I find this post even sadder than your first one. I have never fel tht ended to try to upstage anyone in their job, and never woudl knowingly embarrass someone with my "vast" ball of knowledge. I find the fact you "felt good" about hte result pretty telling about you.

You enjoyed potentially embarrassing someone who was doing her job? I love discussing people's memories, but I think I will pass on sharing yours. I think that if this one is an indication of how your trips go, it is better I do not knwo about them.

I just checked to see if my guess for the population of the US was correct- I was off by 18 million. And I have a bachelor's degree! Oh well.

Sharing memories... One time a CM told me about a great, little known spot to watch the fireworks, where the music is piped in and its less crowded. I already knew about said spot, but I replied "Thank you so much for your help!", because I knew she had good intentions. I felt really happy and went on my way.

Man, you missed a primo upstaging opportunity right there :teeth:
