and go to Disney World as often as you do now if the codes and discounts suddenly disappeared?

I would still go.

When I plan a trip I pick the resort that I'm willing to pay rack rate for. If a great code or discount comes out later then I try to get it. If I can't get a discount on the room, it's no big deal, we'll still go and have a blast. It'll just cost me more$$$$.

As a Canadian visitor, the discounts are a major factor.

For example, in 1991 it cost us $1.17 Canadian to buy $1 U.S. And that time, I received 40 per cent off to stay at the Polynesian using the old shareholder's discount (remember that one?). We also stayed at the YC over Christmas with 10 per cent discount.

By 2001, the Canadian dollar had sunk like a stone and it cost us $1.65 Canadian for $1 U.S. dollar. Discounts were slim.

Now, it is costing $1.50 Canadian for $1 U.S. but the AP discounts are certainly helping.

In those weak dollar years we stayed mostly off property in rented condos because hotel prices were just too high.

In Dec 2001 we got a rate of $289 Canadian at the BC. This was essentially at par so we took it.

So for us with our pathetic currency, the discounts are essential. How would you Americans like it if Disney raised hotel prices an extra 40 per cent in a year or so. That's what happened to us between 1993-1995. Not to mention prices for everything else.

I love the Disney Resorts, love the theme of each resort. Love the idea that I am staying on Disney Property. Just hop on a bus or monorail and relax. Next thing you know is you are at a park or back to your resort.

Without a code or discount things could get very expensive. I don't think I would spend the money for a deluxe. These resorts are wonderful but they can take a big bite out of you vacation fund. I would probably go as often but stay cheaper.

No I would not consider staying off-site if I was spending most of my days at Disney. I love the Disney Resorts and have never been disappointed. The value resorts can be just as magical. Sometimes more.

I've been going to WDW before such things as codes. I have had an AP since 1995 and AP discounts were UNHEARD of. You were lucky to get 20% off a delux and only during the slow times. Discounts at the All Stars were unheard of. I think the only thing different is that because of discounts, folks like me now go more than once a year. If I got no discounts I would go back to going once a year, or possibly 2 shorter trips a year. Right now we go 5-6 times a year, but we are empty nesters and don't have to deal with the extra cost of kids. (Of course, we take the grandson once a year too). But also, back in the earlier days resorts sold out sometimes a year in advance. I made my ressie for CBR in 1989 (when it was brand new) one year in advance to get in. So since resorts sold out back then, there were no need to lure folks in. I always made my ressies a year in advance in the early 90s just to get in. We happily paid full price. It was the price you paid to be on property. If you waited, you stayed at the WDW hotel village.

I would still go, too. We usually book a moderate early & then upgrade to a deluxe when discounts become available. Can't imagine staying off-property after staying in WDW, without a vehicle, for the past 8 years.

I would definitely keep going and stay onsite and just get a value or moderate resort. We just returned from an offsite stay and I vowed that it would be our last offsite trip to WDW.

after 3 bad trips staying on site we now choose to stay of site .
as ap holders parking is not a problem and we save a lot of money. we have made 14 trips in the last 13 years:mad:

irrelevant - old news

YES!

I'm a DVC owner so I sort of locked in at 2002 rates until 2042 !

Woo Hoo.

No way we could stay at most deluxes without AP discount. We're down to one room instead of two (4 kids) which helps, but now two are in college and two getting close.

In 2010 the youngest graduates from college and then it will be nothing but conceirge!!!!

LOL!!! Way to go soccer mom!!! :teeth:

I would go, but maybe not for as long or I would have to stay in a value, as compared with a moderate. We get the APs so the only thing we are spending money on is our room and food... so the amount we spend on food and souveniers would likely be reduced. I don't see that they will be cutting discounts and codes in the near future. They are trying to GET guests, not scare them away!

Same for me. I couldn't imagine not staying on property, so other things would have to be cut.

If I couldnt get discounts to stay on site, then I would stay off site. When we go we stay for 2 weeks. I wouldnt want to spend the extra to stay on site, because when it comes down to it, its really just a place to sleep for us. We a 'park-junkies' and where we sleep doesnt matter that much to us. I would perfer to stay on site, my family yells alot when I even suggest staying off, but I am the boss and if it would save us several hundred dollars, then off site we will be.
I would however, end up using the saved money for charecter meals and things like that.

I would definately keep going-probably could not do two trips in a year though  I just can't imagine not going.

I would definitely continue to stay at a Disney resort.
I've never had codes or discounts other than the disney club and I know my family hasn't always gotten that either. That said, if there were no codes or discounts it wouldn't make a real difference for me since I really never used them much in the first place. I certainly wish we had known about them, we probably would have gone more often or for longer periods of time.

There's no comparison between on site and off-site. I've done both and I would pay the rack rate if I had to...Disney magic is not to be had at a Holiday Inn...

Id still make the trip ... but maybe a shorter one than the normal 2 weeks I usually spend in Orlando.

Near the top, a Canadian DISer hit the nail on the head. No Discounts means limited options at WDW for foreign visitors like myself. However Im willing to compromise to stay on-site. Having stayed from ASSports to WK/AKL obviously the latter is preferred.

If worse came to worse, I would stay off-site but only if my budget dictated it (We were at HRH during 9/11 and stranded in Orlando for 8 nights before we could get home to New Zealand, this forced an off-site change although HRH offered $99/night during the crisis) and I could stay on my own terms (eg Own transport or Rental car is a must off-site , shuttle and cabs are too expensive for the budget concious and dont even get me started on hotel buses and shuttles)

Id still go. Just not as long.

I would fo, stay at AS or Pop-Century is it ever opens and hope to be ablet o go at least once a year.
